Im a Junior and I’ve taken 4 math courses (9th, algebra I; 10th, geometry; 11th algebra II and pre-cal/trig) and I was wondering if I should take a math class (if so I would take an AP math course) in senior year. When I read a college’s course requirements, it usually says 4 units of math but I don’t know if thats in terms of courses or exact years. The reason I took 2 maths this year was a scheduling mistake with my counselor and I ended up not taking science this year. Im going to take that next year. What should I do-- take AP calculus or no math?
yes you would want to take math your senior year no matter how many credits you have. Here is an example from UMass Amherst that says they expect it in bold. I’m guessing it is becoming a common thing admissions will look for.
How full is the rest of your schedule? Is there anything you would be sacrificing to take another math class? Ultimately you need to look at the requirements for the schools that interest you, and consider whether you will be taking higher math courses in college.
Why would you double up on math junior year if not to take calculus senior year? Take AP calc AB and then try to get a 4 or 5 on t he AP test. If you don’t want to major in stem then you will probably have fulfilled your math requirements in college. If you are STEM, then you need calculus.
Also, economics and business majors commonly need calculus. Other social science majors may find calculus useful to better understand statistics that they will use.
Senior year you should have
Math, English, a science, Foreign Language level 4 (if not reached previously), and a social science.
+
1 class that reflects your personal interests (or 2?)
And 1 “fun class” if you have space (I recommend culinary arts).
