Should I take music for the first time in senior year?

Ive wanted to learn an instrument for a while but I dunno if taking it up as a senior would be worth it. I couldn’t do it as a junior since im a transfer. I was thinking about doing percussion, but otherwise I would’ve used the space to take biotech instead.

In my school, you aren’t even allowed to learn an instrument unless you’ve been continually playing from 6th grade. Everyone in the class will have years of experience, so that means much harder music that you might not be able to keep up with.

If you decide to take music, you should play the viola.

@awesomepolyglot pfft violas ares just hipster violins.

@snowfairy137 pfft at least I can play below a G3

@awesomeploygot pfft yeah by like 5 notes which the cellos could compensate for

@snowfairy137 pfft at least people over 60 years of age can hear my high notes

@awesomepolyglot pfft yea because you have “high” notes, not high notes.

@snowfairy137 pfft at least my clef makes sense and is easy to read (middle C is in the middle) and in my class the violas are better than the seconds

On topic for the thread: OP, if you decide to start music, get a private tutor starting as soon as possible. Music classes are often relaxing; however, band and orchestra teachers are scary when you don’t know your music well enough.

@awesomepolyglot pfft at least I don’t have to change clefs, have a clef that’s easily understood by more musicians, compatible with other clefs, and one that makes sense as well (stick the treble and base clef together (like for piano) and the middle C is in the middle). And notice how you said only the second violins are worse than you. This makes sense statistically if you consider that the violins and violas in an orchestra are about equal in playing as a group … the 2nd violins are the worse half of the violins, so they would end up below… BUT this also means that first violins are generally better than violas, and this fact can be seen in most orchestral music.

@OP yea, and you’re going to have to practice a lot, especially because you’d be behind, so make sure you’d have time in your day

Music is one of the better things in life so if you have an opportunity, take it. You’ll have to work hard to be on the level of everyone else but it’s worth it.

Just do it. After school, it will get much more difficult to pursue hobbies and interests, so take this time to explore the things you like. From personal experience, music is a wonderful thing to have.

I’ll assume that the off-topic discussion has either ended or been diverted to PM and that future posts will actually be directed at the OP’s original question.

Thank you.
