Should I take Precalculus over the summer?

Currently, I'm a sophomore in high school and in Algebra 2 with a average of 98%. Our school has marking periods and currently it is the second marking period. The first marking period, I finished with a 95% average. I'm also taking two math classes, Geometry and Algebra 2, at the same time. I'm thinking to major in engineering or applied maths, so can someone tell me if I should take Precalculus over the summer to get into AP Calculus. Also, if I take AP Calculus, should I take Calc AB or BC?

If you really adamant on going on a STEM-based field, it doesn’t hurt taking Pre-Calc over the summer. At my school, I know many who did exactly what you are asking about, and most don’t regret their decisions. Plus, taking AP Calc Junior year looks better to colleges than taking pre-calc.

Also, if you do take AP Calculus, I would say take AP Calc BC. Based on what you are saying, it seems you are a successful maths student, and learning through the easy part of Calc should not be too difficult.

Anyhows, whatever you decide to do, Good Luck :)>-

My recommendation would be to not rush through math courses. Form a good foundation which will serve you well over the long run. You will absolutely need it if you want study engineering.

Why the rush anyway? What do you plan to take in senior year if you have finished AP Calc BC in junior year?

@AndreiTarkovsky‌ MVC?

Sure, MVC. But why? What does that gain you in an engineering undergrad?

If you want to excel in math why not prepare for AIME instead so that you make USAMO?

Thanks guys ^:)^

As long as you make sure you actually learn the material just as well as you would if you took it as a junior, I don’t think it would matter as much. It may be unnecessary, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it :)

I took precal over the summer :slight_smile: No regrets, but I did mostly self study it because I knew the summer school course by itself would be insufficient.

I took pre calc over the summer at a college (I’m a junior in hs) . My class was filled mostly with kids older than me. My class was 6 hours long. If you like to enjoy your summer then dont take it but if you’re up for the challenge it’s worth it. It’s pretty easy. I got a 100 on the final but it takes a lot of work.

I have a friend that took pre-calculus online over the summer so he could get into BC for junior year. It’s doable.
