Hi. I’m a high school student who is planning on taking some classes at a community college. I was wondering whether I should take psychology and sociology during the summer at my local community college. I want to go into medical school and since these courses would be transferable to the university I am planning to go too, I was wondering if it is a good idea to do this. I know that psychology and sociology aren’t really pre-reqs but they are recommended for the MCAT, which is why I was planning on taking them. Should I instead take other general ed classes or should I stick with these?
Any course you take at a community college is required to be reported and so the first consideration is whether you will do well (B is not considered doing well).
Psychology and Sociology will be required in 3 years or earlier. You are still in high school. Whether the level it is taught at community college is good enough to do well in MCAT is also a consideration.
The first priority of a HS student is to do well in HS classes so you can get into a good college of your choice. Any college-level classes should be considered icing on the cake, do not take them unless you are sure to get an A for the class. A B grade will not give a good impression to the college adcom, if you are targeting the top schools, it will also hinder your future medical school chances.
Just FYI, you don’t have to “target top schools” to become a doctor. Plenty of wonderful doctors get accepted to medical schools every year who don’t attend top ranked colleges.
Plenty of kids get accepted to medical schools with a B in a college course. Some even have a C.
Of course, best to get the best grades you can possibly get.
I’m taking them over the summer and I’ve taken classes before (an anatomy and physiology class to be exact) and I’ve done well in it. I have strait A’s in high school and I am sure I could get an A in psychology and sociology. My target school is UC Davis, hopefully I can get in.
Just to clarify, when I said I’ve taken classes before, I meant I have taken community college classes before.
I think you won’t have an issue. It sounds like you are committed to getting the best grades possible in these cc courses. Best of luck to you!
