Should I take the ACT even if I have a good SAT score?

I'll be a senior after this summer, and I've taken the SAT twice but have yet to take the ACT. Should I even bother taking the ACT since I have a pretty good SAT score (I got a 2240 on my second one)? I've heard that everyone should take the ACT at least once, even if they have high SAT scores, for scholarship purposes. I don't really mind taking another test, it's just the preparation I'll have to do over the summer (if I choose to take it) that I dread.

I don’t plan to, can’t be bothered to prepare for it.

I would recommend taking the ACT at least once, even if you only take it cold, for two reasons: first, it’s possible that you’ll be naturally better at it (my first SAT was much worse than my ACT); second, a 2240 and a 33 on the ACT looks much better than just a 2240. Of course, if you do much worse on the ACT, you don’t have to send it.

I’m in the same position as you. I’ve taken the SAT twice, but have yet to open an ACT prep book. I’ll probably give it a go in September.

I’m taking the ACT cold tomorrow with a 2300. We’ll see.

the preparation isn’t bad for it unless you are completely unfamiliar with the ACT. I find the ACT Reading to be MUCH easier than SAT Reading (35R vs 690CR…), the Math is on par for most of it, and Writing/English are similar with formatting differences. Science is obviously not similar to anything you’ll see on the SAT though.

In my case, there is no way I could outperform my SAT on an ACT.

Yes, this contributed to my lack of motivation to succeed when I was taking the ACT.

Congratulations on your perfect score. You’ll probably be fine not taking the ACT. However, the other 99.99% or so of us can potentially improve by taking it.

Whom is that addressed to?

silverturtle,
That comment was directed to Jersey13 who has a 2400 on the SAT… which begs the question what is Jersey13 doing on the ACT prep forum, on an ACT thread on a Friday night before the exam? Odd.

^ Well, my 2400 and 36 don’t keep me from coming here. :)

…

how caustic.

What I did was send my registration score reports to safety schools only. That way, when I see my ACT score, I can look at a conversion chart. If my ACT score is higher/on par with my SAT score, I’ll send it to the rest of my schools. If not, then I just won’t send it and there’s no harm done.

Don’t take the ACT unless the college you want to apply to asks for it. Your SAT is fine.

With a score of 2240, I’d only recommend taking the ACT if you have a deficiency in one of the subscores. I had a 2220 superscore, but with 680 on CR. I fared much better on the ACT (35).

If you already know where you will apply check to see what scores they want - some schools will take the ACT and SAT in lieu of SAT and SAT subject tests. Depends on which testing works better for you - I would recommend taking the tests and deciding which scores to submit based on the outcome unless required to send all scores.

agreed, take it cold once.

I was fairly happy with my SATS: 2300+, but for some reason the ACT came a lot more naturally to me. And I was kinda lucky.

but you have nothing to lose because you have a good SAT there so go for it!

Best of luck.
