should i take the ap chem test if i am in honors chem?

i am a sophomore right now takin honors chem, and i was wonderin if i should take the ap chem test. i think at most, i can get a 3 if i studied a lot. is it true, taht if i do get a 3, will i be able to skip the first trimester if i go to a UC?

Honors chem does NOT prepare you well enough for AP chem and you probably won't do too well. And I'm not sure about the answer to your UC question.

I would encourage you to hold off taking the AP exam until you have taken the class. It will give you solid footing to get a 4/5, which you will need to be competitive in the top tier UCs.

Honors Chem (first year) only covers the basics of chemistry, AP chemistry takes what you learn in honors chemistry and builds on it A LOT! Therefore, to take the AP test...you would need two years of classes.

In my school, honors (sophomore) chemistry is nearly identical to AP chemistry. Students do successfully take the AP test after the honors course. The classes are so similar that the chem teacher uses the same ppts for both classes. AP only covers some more required labs and the reaction prediction. Overall, I would say its a personal choice.

Depends a lot on your school.

If you can only get a 3 you might as well wait until you take AP chem and get a 5 on the test.

i wont take ap chem in my upcoming high school years

...right...well...good luck with that...

Unless your honors chem is a 2nd year Chemistry Class, I highly discourage you taking the AP Test.

Well, I take that back. If there are more people with 1's and 2's, it's easier to make 4's and 5's. I say go right ahead and take the AP test. It's only going to help everyone else. ;)

(really-- you shouldn't take it unless you take the actual AP Chem class. This is definitely an AP Exam you can't self-study for)

I wouldn't take AP exam after only honors chem. At least in my school, honors wouldn't be enuf. I studied my butt off and got a 4 and I'm happy with that!

It really depends on how good you are at chemistry. I sucked at honors chem and also AP chem. I barely made A-'s. But I basically self studied starting spring break. I reviewed all the chapters in princeton review and did the practices. I also did a few practice APs. Get princeton review and sparknotes. It should help you get prepared. Also for the reactions, pr has a awesome review section. I didn't miss any on my AP chem exam!!! You should be set to get a 4 or a 5, then!

im in honors chem and i got an 89 for the semester..should i still go for it? cuz im in a tight situation with money right now, and if it is possible of gettin a 4 or a 5, ill definitely buy the book. but if its only a small chance, im not gonna risk it

It depends on what you're learning. Stop by the library and look at an APChem Prep Book. If you can do what's inside, then go ahead.

If Honors Chem is a first year class, don't take it and expect a fantastic score. If it is your second year, you'll probably do fine. At our school we have a Pre-AP (Honors) Chemistry and an AP Chemistry. You'd have to take the Pre-AP before the AP, obviously. I definitely would not have recieved anything better than a 1 if I had taken the AP Test after Chem I.

To Recap:
Honors Chem = Chem I, Don't take.
Honors Chem = Chem II, Do take.

The fact is, a botched AP will look worse on your resume than no AP at all. Unless your school prepares you or if you're prepared to do some fairly intense outside studying on your own (hiring a tutor would be optimal, but if money's tight, you could just really commit yourself to studying the textbook and buying a prep book), don't take the AP. Having said that, if Chemistry is your passion or if your work load is unusually light this year, it could be a viable option. Just remember that your score is on your transcript for good - don't take the test unless you have studied enough to get a good score.

Okay, I'm kind of confused on this..my Senior year (current sophmore), I will have Advanced Chem...it's not called AP Chem, are these the same? I really need to talk to someone who knows alot about AP exams in general in a chat room or something because I don't really egt it and I am having trouble finding the information that I need..

At my school, you HAVE to take advanced chem before you can take AP chem.

You can't even go to AP chem from regular chem, it has to be advanced.

Maybe your school's advanced chemistry considers its class equivalent to an AP class, but you really have to talk to your teachers/AP coordinator/counselor
