I’m currently a junior, and I am wondering if I should take both the old and new SAT.
Since there’s so much test prep material available for the old SAT, I’m thinking of taking it in January (last old SAT administered). Obviously I’d have to put in the effort, but should I? I’m in an unique position to take both of them, and I am hesitant in being a guinea pig for the new one. Question is if it’s worth the effort?
I wouldn’t take both old and new as Stanford for example says they will superscore but will only superscore old with old and new with new. Many schools are taking this stance. Something to consider since the current SAT is going away.
If you have the time and can prep effectively, you should only do the old test. There’s lots of info on the SAT Prep forum that can help you get a very high score if you’re willing to put in the work. That kind of info will not be available for the new test.
My son is also a Junior. He took the June and October SAT test along with the June and Sept ACT. He will get his last score back in a few days. It’s possible that you could take the January test and be done with testing. I think there is some risk in waiting to take only the new test. Why? Partially because it’s new but also because you won’t get your scores back from the first test in a timely manner. I am not saying this will happen but you don’t want to be one of those kids that takes the test in March finds out in May that your score isn’t high enough and then you have to study over the summer and hope that the October score is high enough… Also would take the ACT it may be a better test for you.
*Just know that if you want to take the new SAT, no one is blocking you. Maybe it has some features that you like or additions/subtractions which interest you. However, no one can argue the fact that practice makes perfect. If you can take the new one, great. If you can take both, why not?
