Should I talk about the stock market in my application?

Hi everyone,

I’m a high school senior currently filling in my application forms and answering the questions. I am considering adding work in the stock market as one of my activities.

For the record, I entered the stock market (as an individual investor, i.e. I trade by myself on computer software) in March 2015 and managed to make enough money to pay for two EPGY courses. It’s not really relevant to the fields I am thinking of majoring in (Engineering Physics/Computer science), but maybe it could be relevant for the “initiatives” colleges encourage people to take on?

Where I come from, the stock market (or talking about money in general) comes with a bit of a negative connotation. What about the US?

What are your thoughts? Should I add it in my application?

Thank you!

This would be a very good thing to mention or even turn into an essay.

I think you should mention it on your common app. Investing in the stock market doesn’t have any negative connotations here in the USA

I don’t know that it is much of an EC. It isn’t a business. The market went up (we were still In a worldwide bull market then) and you made a little money. I suppose at some schools, like CMC, it might play well in a small way. Others it wouldn’t have any impact.

@intparent Well I am still working in the stock market. I think one of the biggest outcomes I got from it, apart from the money, is the fact that I started reading business news and learned a whole lot about economics and how the world works (from the business aspect). It’s one of the things that I will probably mention in the application.
