I am a freshman at a usnewsweek top 20 university. I decided to attend because of merit scholarship offer i received and my parents pressured me to accept.
I wonder if i am being silly and should just deal with my unhappiness or begin the transfer process. I feel like many of my problems- the enviroment etc. are specific to my college but would like to hear from other people who are considering transfering from four year colleges...
I had strong stats in high school (leadership in activities, 1540 sat, 780-800 range sat2's) and now have a 4.0 at my college... what should i do to increase my chances of transferring to another good school with a better fitting enviroment for me?

you have good stats. I would reccomend that you focus on your essays and reasons for transferring.

if you have worthy enough reasons by the college you're applying to, you'll be able to do it, its generally harder for someone already in a top 20 school to apply to another top 20 school though

why is it harder to transfer between top 20 schools?

... the primary reason i want to transfer is my general distaste for the social life of the campus- it is somewhere i will never be comfortable. i find the people annoying and ended up in the hospital after a hazing incident (no action taken by the university). would these be considered valid reasons to transfer/should i share the incident that resulted in my hospitalization with the colleges i apply to?

Wow... where exactly do you go?

in general, there is less reason for someone already at a top 20 college to transfer to another, rather than someone at a 2 year school or lower tier 4 year school. also, the latter groups bring to the college a type of student who would not have normally been at the college, which in turn brings "diversity" of a sort.

as for your chances, i think that you have what appears to be a valid, compelling reason to want to transfer, which should offset what i just described, and you have solid stats, so you should be able to go to a school at least equal to the level of the one youre at.

What school are you trying to transfer from and what schools you're looking to transfer to? While they may all be top 20, there is differentiation among top 20 schools. Just look around for differences and things you're looking for in whichever university that yours doesnt have and things you'd like to pursue there.
