Should I transfer colleges?

Basically, I came to my current school intending to be a human bio major, but after taking my first biology class and hating it I quickly changed my mind. I am now thinking of majoring in advertising/journalism and even though my current school offers this, the school I'm thinking of transferring to seems to have a better program for it, as well as lots of fun advertising related clubs.

I also don't really like the social vibe of my current school. My college has around 3000 students and is 10-15 minutes away from any town. Dorm life is awful compared to my friend who I visited. At her school there were fun people all over the place and some random guys we didn't even know asked us to have a snowball fight. That would never happen at my school. Almost everybody goes home or to other colleges to party on the weekends, leaving my school a painfully boring ghost town. One of my friends is a junior, and he said that only 8 of the 64 people that were in his freshman dorm still go here. I just get an overall vibe that a lot of people don't want to be here. The people who do seem to love it here are primarily pokemon/dungeons & dragons/anime lovers, and that is just not my cup of tea at all.

So even though I could get the major I want here, should I transfer? Are wanting a better social environment, location, and extra curriculars good enough reasons to leave, or should I just deal with it and stick it out here for the next 3 1/2 years?

Seems like it isn’t the right place for you. The most important thing is being happy so I think you should send out some transfer apps to be safe (you don’t have to leave if you change your mind next semester, but just to be safe. What school is it by the way?

If you are considering a transfer, you should apply. Even if you do not actually transfer out, you are better off leaving your options open!

Your desire for a stronger program in your new intended major field(s) is perhaps the best “reason to transfer” that there is. Wanting a “non-suitcase” school weekend social environment is also a good reason, as is being excited by the number of clubs related to your interests.

Write the essays well and you should have success. And I agree wtih lexieam that, if you are considering it, go ahead and apply. You can always change your mind and stay where you are.

Good luck.

I am in the same situation you are in right now and I say do what feels right for you. If that school isn’t making you happy, then by all means send out transfer applications!
