Hi everyone,
I only applied to a select number of selective schools, so there’s a chance I won’t even get in anywhere (although I am on the verge of submitting a late application to U Miami). I currently am at a top 20 school and have plenty of friends – you would think that would make someone happy. But I am really struggling with the fact that I have 4 years of medical school and 5 years of residency ahead of me. I know I’m going to have to work hard (which comes naturally) and I love my classes, but I want to go out and experience new things too at college (i.e. a city or hiking or cool things like that). I want to go on adventures and not sit around and watch TV with my friends every weekend (because I don’t party). Is this a valid reason to transfer? Or should I reconsider my reasoning?
Students who attend “top 20” universities and care about getting high grades in my experience spend a lot of time studying. Admittedly I only have experience at two different top 20 universities. However, I doubt that this is different at any other top 20 school.
Students who are premed at ANY university and who care about getting into medical school spend a lot of time studying. I do not think that anyone goofs off much as an undergraduate student and then makes it into medical school.
I think that you are describing the life of a premed student (and engineering students and many other students). I do not see why transferring would make this any different.
However, it also sounds like you have friends and are doing well where you are.
I do not see the point of transferring at least as you have described your situation. I do see significant risk of transferring.
How about speaking up to your friends and planning something more fun to do on the weekend besides watching tv? Doesnt seem like you need a new school, maybe you need to mature and not be afraid to tell your friends what you are really interested in.
