I am currently a freshman at Missouri University of Science and Technology. My major is mechanical engineering. I am considering transferring to Mizzou for several reasons. I don’t fit in very well at MS&T, I don’t enjoy my time here, and my GPA is getting really bad. I know I would enjoy myself better at Mizzou and I would be able to get better grades. There is a couple things keeping me from making my decision. First, my dad would be very disappointed in me if I chose to transfer to a school that doesn’t have a primary focus on engineering. Secondly, MS&T’s engineering is a lot better than Mizzou’s engineering. Is it worth it to transfer and enjoy myself or should I just stick it through and hopefully end up with a good job in the end? I’m sure I could end up with a job after Mizzou too, I just don’t know how much harder it would be. I’m torn on what to decide, any advice helps. Thank you.
If your grades are really bad, it is possible that the social scene is a partial contributor but perhaps you need to consider whether you really want to be an engineer? Poor grades in your first year might indicate that your heart is really not in engineering. If that is the case, then Missouri is probably a better choice for you. If you are positive that you want to do engineering but you really cannot stand Rolla and MUST then as long as the Engineering program you graduate from is ABET accredited, you should be able to find a job. Yes, MUST has stronger engineering programs but that may not make a huge difference in the end. The advantage of Missouri is that you have many other options for your major, it being a larger school.
