I was just admitted to the school of art for communication design! This decision caught me a bit off guard and they want a deposit by April 30th which means I won't have time to visit again. I'm also considering BU for its school of communications. I'm very interested in visual communication but I'm not currently an art student so I don't know if I wanna give up my liberal arts degree for a BFA. How is Washu with flexibility? Would I be able to get a duel degree? Do transfers adjust well?

I'd really appreciate if someone could give me their thoughts on Washu vs BU and also vs Tulane (my current school) for communications

washu is SUPER flexible. you can take classes in any of the schools whenever you want, and you can switch schools really easily. that was probably one of the most attractive things about washu for me. a dual degree is also highly possible - although a lot of students here take a fifth year in order to complete it, and that might have to be the case for you depending on how many transfer credits you get. i can’t comment much about the transferring, but i would say that if you are considering multiple disciplines, washu is a great place to explore them.

very flexible. dual degrees have to (obviously) satisfy the requirements of two different schools, which can be a lot and would take good planning. i don’t know how tight it would be for transfers. double majoring, regardless of whether your second major is in the same school as your degree, is much easier and pretty common here.

The students I know in the Art school really enjoy it, and a bunch (probably the communication design majors?, not entirely sure their major) worked at some of the larger advertising firms. What little I do know about the curriculum of the art school is that you will take a lot of classes in liberal arts, but there are also somewhat strict core requirements in Art. So I don’t know how this will work for you as a transfer, but the ability for you to do non-Art things probably depends largely on whether you are considered to have completed the required drawing and design courses. I’m sure you can ask to be put in touch with one of the art school advisors now before April 30 and they can tell you more information about the curriculum and where you stand etc.

“Duel” degrees are not popular at Wash U, but yes there are some people that do them, but primarily Engineers with Business it seems. I think it would be absolutely silly if you did a dual degree as an Art student. Just get a second major within A&S, or within Business, or whatever. Dual Degree just means you get two diplomas and complete the core curriculum requirements in each school. Why bother completing the discovery curriculum system in Art Sci, when you can just get a second major in whatever specific field you want? No one is going to care that you have two undergrad diplomas. Just have a second major. Echo the same comments generallyrong made about the extra time issue about dual degree.

With that said, again the art school at Wash U is highly regarded, transfers seem to adjust really well (I’m buddies with a guy who transferred, who is in a fraternity, plays IM sports, and is VP of community service group), and Wash U is just an awesome school. I don’t know how many years you’ve completed at Tulane, but if you’ve already spent 3 years there and would come here for Senior year only, then perhaps just stay at Tulane. If you’ve only done your Freshman year there, then you’ll get more out of Wash U for 3 years here. Wash U has is highly regarded as an institution than BU in nearly every regard (except within Boston, and for sports). You’ll probably find a lot more parallels between Wash U and Tulane, which will probably help your transition a bit.

I guess the main decision for me would be do I want to double major in Communication Design and Political Science at WashU or do I want to study Communications at BU. BU has a great school of COM and I’m interested in their programs with Advertising, Photojournalism, and Magazine Journalism. It’s a hard decision since I’m looking at such different programs.
I say I’d do Poli Sci as my double major because I have half the major done at Tulane already. But I don’t think I want to pursue Poli Sci after college so I wish WashU had a comm or journalism department that would go well with Communication Design. I definitely would wanna show I have a liberal arts background too though since I already have so many credits done at Tulane, I guess I have to see which WashU would accept.
It’s good to hear the transfer process goes smoothly since there’s such a small number of people who do transfer to Washu. BU has way more which appeals to me. I’ll be a junior next year and I completed 2 years at Tulane already so I’d be trying to transfer for the next 2 years. Tulane is weak in comm and art so I’m reluctant to just come back here. What would you suggest for a transfer who wants to get involved and meet people easily?
