I am currently an undergrad freshman at an instate 4 year university. I chose this college out of high school because I was unsure of what to major in. However, I now realize what I want to major in and my current school does not offer it. My dream school does offer this major. Everyday I regret my choice of not picking my dream school because I don’t want to major in something I don’t want and because I don’t like this current school. The problem is that in order to transfer into my dream school, I can only do so for the spring 2019 term because I do not have enough credits. I am in honors here and was recently accepted into a competitive program. I do not know whether to join the program or not because joining means I have to take all honors classes. However, the transfer school transfers all honors classes to standard credit and GPA is important in the admissions process. I worry that if I do not get in as a transfer then I will lose, but I can get a higher GPA if I take standard classes. What should I do?
On a side note, how hard is the transition for transfer students? Where do I live and how hard is it to find my niche?
If you absolutely know what you want to study and your current university does not offer this major then this is a solid reason for wanting to transfer. I would not worry so much about the honors stuff since your goal is to gain admission as a transfer and have all of your credits accepted for transfer. If this happens, how important is the honors stuff? I think it all boils down to whether your desire to transfer is more about the lack of major at your current school or if it is more about the desire to attend a “dream” school. Your desires can be both, of course, but I often become nervous is a student’s main reason is because of a “dream” school. The grass is always greener and all that junk.
Transferring can be a challenge. If finances are a concern, will you receive enough assistance at the new school? Acclimation can be tough, too, since you’ll enter as a junior, I assume, yet all of the juniors at your new school will have already been there for two years and have their own circles of friends.
It’s not all bad, though. I started at a community college and transferred in as a junior to a private liberal arts school. Yes, it took me a term to find my place, but then I found my group of friends (first-years!) and had a blast.
Actually I will be a second semester sophomore. I worry that if I am not accepted as a transfer then I will have lost the opportunity of honors if I decide not to take honors, since I must choose classes now (freshman spring)
OP: It might be helpful to name the universities & your desired major.
I agree with @Publisher. There is not enough information in your post to give a meaningful opinion.
