Should I Transfer?

There are three things that I’ve been looking for in a college

Academic ‘prestige’

Low Costs

Small class sizes

As it were, I’ve not been able to find all three in any one college-- everyone I’ve looked at happens to meet only two requirments. The one I’m at now has small class sizes and low costs, but is a ‘tier 4’ school and isn’t known as a highly prestigous school or anything.

For me personally, this is fine. I love the school and don’t feel as though I have to go to an amazing school to ‘prove myself’. I mean, I got good grades in high school and graduated with honors, took a few AP classes and have done extra-curriculars. In college, I’m doing well and plan on going through their honors program and have continued with many of the extra-curriculars that I did in High School and have even added a few more.

My only concern in employment. Does attending a lower ranking school hurt your chances for employment? Or, to be more specific, does it hurt your chances of employment in the Publishing field?

I’m majoring in English and I want to go on to work in Publishing, which I realize can be a fairly competitive job market. But as long as I keep up my grades would the school I attend matter?

Basically, I’m wondering if it would be better to transfer to IU-- Bloomington or Purdue? Being from Indiana, I would get in-state tuition, which isn’t much higher than the tuition I’m paying now. You get the ‘prestige’ that comes with these schools, but I would lose out on the ‘small school atmosphere’ that I get with my current college. I just feel as though I would be totally lost in such a large campus.

Does anyone have any experience with the publishing field to know how much emphasis is placed on the school attended?

from what i hear publishing is a tough field to crack

they say the college you go to only determines your first salary right out of college

whether you go to the school youre at know or IU, i really don't think matters much, its not like you're moving onto columbia or yale where you'll have one foot in the door right out of college

your going to start at the bottom either way, i think, thats the way it works nowadays...if you're happy where youre at i wouldnt transfer unless you can get into a top 50 or so...

i'm trying to transfer OUT of IU bloomington, haha..

it's not a bad school (i believe it's tier 1), but i wouldn't say that has prestige. the music school is highly prestigious, but you're majoring in english..

to be honest though, i don't know how their english department is. it could be great, but i haven't heard about it.

Well, perhaps I'm using the wrong word. I don't mean 'prestige' like one would use for Havard or Yale or other Ivy League type schools, but rather one that is 'tier 1' or generally given a better reputation. :/ Does that make more sense, maybe?

yes, but i doubt it will matter to employers that much
