Should I try?

I'm currently a freshman at a top school in NYC, I love the city but am planning to be an education and history major. I did some research and it turns out Vanderbilt is the top school for education and one of the top 30 for history so I think I could get a significantly better education there. My first term was really bad though, I got stuck in an advanced 5 credit language class which killed my gpa.. do I still have any shot at getting in?

-3.1 fall, 4.0 so far for spring though (midterms start in a week)
-SAT's: 1360/ 2130
-went to a top 10 private high school in the northeast, graduated in top quarter of class
-AP Art History/ European History/ English all 4's
-great recs from college counselor, teachers and dean
-tons of volunteer work including fundraisers I've organized and run at college and outreach programs in the city, H4H, etc.
-was a state champion golfer in high school, active in a number of clubs and held the same job for the last 6 years (working with kids which ties to education)

Don’t be too hard on yourself for first semester. A 3.1 really isn’t bad and colleges understand that first semester freshman go through a big adjustment. I live in New York and have two children attending Vanderbilt. I can’t say enough great things about Vanderbilt but I strongly recommend that you pay the school a visit as there is a real difference between NY and Nashville. If you are attending NYU you will see that the two schools are very different (I have spent a lot of time at NYU). Personally I think Vanderbilt is superior in just about every way. Your SAT score 1360/1600 is a little low but 2130/2400 is right there (Vandy looks more at the 1400 score). In any case I think as a transfer it is less important. Whatever you do, good luck!
