I got accepted to Stern, but the tuition is just so much...I got nothing in scholarships because I MISSED one of the FA forms ( this make so angry/upset), and the total estimated cost is 47,000 while commuting from my home in NJ. That leaves about 20,000 per year in loans if I get a job while I'm there to cover the daily expenses. My family have decided to send me to stern and will pay half of the estimated cost... however I don't know if I should go to stern and give my family and me this tremendous financial burden. Although Villanova is not as strong in business, it has offered me more aid and i would not have to take out any loans. I want to know if Stern is worth the risk of heavy student debt, and if the difference between Villanova School of business and stern is significant enough to do so. I feel that although villanova is a step down.. with a stellar gpa, networking, and internships I should have the same opportunities...but stern is hard to turn away. What should I do?

Hi there,
I am one of the parents here and wow, that is a tough one. What is the cost of Villanova? What is the price differential? Right off the bat I can tell you this. I live in NYC and work in the financial sector. I happen to be friends with two Sternies, they both graduated at about the same time as I. I even graduated with higher stats that one of them but alas, those guys got hired right away, with signing bonuses to boot. A Stern degree is not going to do much in and out of itself, but if you apply yourself, get excellent grades and use the NYU resources to the fullest, I think you will be making a sound investment.

Also, do not give up on your fin aid fight. Can you schedule a meeting with the fin aid director or anyone there? You live in NJ perhaps a face to face would help.

I know NYU has a rather subpar reputation here in cc, but let me tell you, that degree opens a lot of doors, at least in NYC and especially for Stern.

Best of luck to you.

Also, the only way to find out if something is worth it , is to try it out. You are not going to incur all debt right away. Things could change. As of now, you are just an applicant to NYU. once a student, you will be able to see if there are other opportunities within NYU for a scholarship or grant. worst case scenario, you transfer out. That is what I would do if you were my child. I’ll rather have the regret of having to transfer my kid out than not trying to make it work. Stern is one of the most prestigious business schools in the nation, as you know. Congratulations on your admission.
