Should I wait till the semester is over to send in my transcripts?

I am a senior and already sent in my applications for USC, UCLA and NYU. All I need to do is send in my transcripts. I was told that I should wait until the semester is over to send in my transcripts so my recent grades show up....Is this true? (The deadlines for USC, UCLA and NYU are almost over)

No. Your school sends an updated transcript, showing your grades from first semester of senior year, when it sends the Mid-Year Report. In fact, that’s just about the only thing the Mid-Year Report is for.

First, you do not send any transcripts to UCLA. Its application requires you to self-report all your courses and grades and transcripts are not to be sent until next July after you graduate. Moreover, it does even want to know what your first semester senior year grades are for the purpose of making an admission decision as it uses grades through junior year for that.

Second, any college that requires transcripts requires that you send them by the application deadline and if you don’t, your file will be deemed incomplete and admission may be denied solely on that basis. NYU, like many, then wants you to send a mid-year report after you have applied which includes a second transcript with your first semester grades but you still must send a transcript with grades through junior year at time you apply.

Third, USC recommends that you submit a mid-year report with first semester grades after applying but it is not required. In other words, if your grades are super-stellar through junior year you might not need it.

As to a mid-year report, you should not assume your high school will automatically send one to schools to which you have applied and thus make sure you request it for colleges that require it.

Drusba, thanks for clarifying that a student must ASK his or her high school to send the Mid-Year Report.

And obviously I had no idea about UCLA or USC, so thanks for that, too.
