I'm planning on applying Early Action to MIT and Caltech. But since my grades won't be there for senior year if I do, should I wait? My GPA after Junior Year will almost certainly be 4.22 and after Senior Year it will almost certainly be 4.32. Also, I plan on majoring in physics (what kind I'm not sure yet) and I'll be taking AP Physics Senior Year. Suggestions? Thanks!

I hope you have backup plans… depending on your SAT/ACT scores and ECs that is.

well it doesnt really matter cuz even if you dont apply early, they will barelllly even have your first semester grades. sooo yeahhh lol

Early Action benefits the universities. It is non-binding so there isn’t any real incentive for the school to admit you unless you would have been admitted anyway in regular decision. For a number of schools EA is a harder admit. The only compensating factor is if you’re not admitted EA you may be rolled into the regular decision pool.

College decisions are primarily made on your record through first semester senior year (For arguments sake let’s say the cut-off is basically December 31). So the difference in applying EA versus regular decision is your work from September to December; how much difference that will make in your decision is anyone’s guess.

Catria’s point is well taken, have a larger list of schools that gives you a wider range of acceptance rates. MIT (9%) and CalTech (13%) are lottery ticket type of admissions. You’ll be up against the very best so give yourself options.

You should look at UIUC, UT-Austin…
