I was caught cheating on a test during my junior year. As a result, I have academic dishonesty on my high school record. Should I write about it on my college essay?

Are you going to write about how it made u a better and more honest person? Personally, I don’t think it’s a good idea… 'cause you’re emphasizing the problem when you write about it.

No! It brings to much attention to the problem. Make your other qualities stand out more.

yes, im writing about how it changed my character and what i learned from the experience

I highly advise against writing about this in your college essay. Your commonapp/colleges essays are meant to bring to light good things about you, not bad things (even if you learned something from it).

If you wanted to talk about this BRIEFLY, there is a section where you can add supplemental notes to your application. I would write something there touching on this subject.

Your main college essays should focus on something other than academic dishonesty as these essays are what paint the biggest picture of you. You don’t want them to remember you as “the applicant who cheated.”

That’s a great idea…if you want to get rejected.

There is a question on The Common Application that asks whether you have ever been subject to disciplinary action for academic or behavioral misconduct. (I’m paraphrasing here.) You will need to answer yes. When you do this, you will be prompted to upload an explanation. This response from you will be in addition to your personal essay.

If you have questions about how to address the issue, your seek advice from your counselor.
