He is weaker on extracurriculars/leadership, so I’d like him to focus on essays, instead of studying for August Math 2 SAT II. However, I realize some schools might want to see more “breadth.”
Should he retake Math 2 Subject 2 exam in August?
Your advice very appreciated,
Soloparent
Nooooooooo. (No need; your kiddo demonstrates plenty of breadth.)
Good luck.
Thanks bluebayou. Only Carnegie Mellon on his bigger list mentioned wanting Math 2, so we may not even apply there. Glad to hear it should be okay for the rest.
No, he should not retake any tests. He is 100% done with testing.
Such a relief, Lindgraf! Thanks for your reply.

- A 740 SAT Math 2 is fine for Dietrich! My D17 - also a history major - scored the same. She pulled her RD application because she got into UChicago EDII but if it's any help we had absolutely no qualms about that Math score for CMU. She also scored a 760 in US History and a 5 on that APUSH so we felt she was fine there as welll. The Math 2 curve is ridiculous due the select group of kids taking that exam - the vast majority of whom are STEM.
Hi JBStillFlying. Thanks for your reply and big congrats to your D17! Seems like our two have similar history interests and choices. Has she been enjoying U of C and the history department? (Am I hijacking my own thread here?)
@soloparent, UChicago has one of the best-ranked graduate history depts. in the world. For undergrads, the very comprehensive Core includes a civilization sequence where you read primary sources and learn the basics of historical research, etc. The options there are numerous, to say the least, and your son will find something that sparks his interest. Plus, the humanities and social sciences cores can end up covering a lot of “history” as well, depending on which sequence you choose.
D17 will actually be taking two Civ. sequences as a second year since one of them was recommended for her specific concentration (the other one will satisfy her Core requirement). She’s been mostly immersed in the Core but has really enjoyed it so far. Hard work but a great fit for the intellectually curious.
Our S19 also has UChicago high on his list and is toying with the thought of History at least as a double major.
