should my son send in SAT scores before he takes it?

My S is a pretty good student...and is very involved at school. He took the ACT and got a 30, but hasn't taken the SAT before. I was wondering if he should send in the scores for his SAT before he takes it (using the 4 free reports he gets). I guess this could be a risk if he sent it to his top choice schools and he didn't do well (wants to go to ND or G'town).

I've never been through the college application process before with a child, and I'm not sure if he can just put his scores on his applications to colleges next year.

Thanks.

I would advise against pre-sending scores in the event of an unexpected poor performance. Sending them to “safety” schools may be a valid option, however, if it causes any regret to not save that extra bit of money.

Students must send scores through the testing agency (via his College Board account). Self-reporting is available on college applications but official reports must be sent.
