Hey guys, another typical "should I retake" thread. I'm tryna go ivy/ top 25 schools, and I just took the jan SAT. Got a 680 in CR, 770 in M, and 790 in W. That gives me a 1450/2240 (so inadequate, EVERYONE has high 2300's on this board). I also took the test in december and got a 2040. Is it worth retaking a third time (will 3 times look bad? I really want a 1500/2300), and if so when should I do it (for the best curve, dont wanna take in may because of APs). My GPA and ECs are all in line with what they should be, but I'm kinda worried about these scores. ALSO IM ASIAN so they seem kinda low for upenn, cornell, dartmouth, berkeley, etc. I really appreciate any advice you guys give me.

Why don’t you do something else worthwhile with your time? Do some volunteer work. Learn another language. Do you have any idea how many similar applications you’re going to be competing against next year?

If your reading score was above 700 in CR on the first test (sounds like it was not), then move on. The key here is CR, get that to 730+ and relax.

If this is your first time, then yes. Your CR is a little bit low. Also, try the ACT.

@Momzie I’m fluent in another language and have hundreds of volunteer hours, just worried about the score. I think my activities that aren’t school related are decent

@2018dad no unfortunately this is my second time. 2300+ in three times or 2240 in two times is what its gonna be

Try the ACT then. My daughter has a lower SAT composite (2200) than you but she has higher CR+M (CR=770, M=750). Most schools give emphasis on CR+M and some (Chicago, Cornell, Georgetown) doesn’t even give much consideration on W.

Ivys will superscore. Is any of your CR scores above 700? If not, take it again. Put all your study effort into CR.

@2018dad thank you for the advice, I definitely will try the ACT. @WasatchWriter unfortunately my CR score from dec is not above 700, I may just take a third time depending on my ACT score

I don’t think you really need to take it again. It’s anecdotal, but there was a kid recently from my state who got into Yale with a 2200 (granted, he had impressive ECs and took 10 AP classes). It’s definitely possible for you to get into some really good schools with that score.

@ckoepp127 thanks for the encouraging words mate, I would kill for your 800 in CR. Got a question though. Was your friend asian? I know that it might not sound important, but affirmative action is just so bad nowadays (african american guy from my school with an 1890 got into MIT regular decision with lackluster ECs, asian didnt even get deferred ED with a 2380!)

He’s actually not my friend (don’t even know him personally, he just made local news for some reason). He’s white, but I think don’t think he came from wealth.
