Should Tufts be Ranked Higher?

@tsbna44 Like this poster said, they do adjust. But also as someone very familiar with the area, let me just say that the disparity in cost of living between Boston and NYC is not that significant. Boston is crazy expensive too! Still agree with Tufts being more academic and “prestigious”.

Tufts is a good school.

It may be foolish of me, but i put academic quality above all else when comparing schools. Class sizes, prof interaction, and other variables are also important, but the quality of teaching should be #1 in my book.

Tufts isn’t top-20 in many majors that are ranked. Certainly they are top-shelf in IR, but you don’t find them ranked highly in things like Math, Sociology, CS, History, English, or Chem.

Most of the other T-30s – and a lot of state schools further down the rankings like UW-Madison, Washington, and Illinois – have a plethora of highly ranked programs. That’s your academic reputation.

I think Tufts’ closest peers overall are probably USC, NYU, BC, BU, Wake Forest, Rochester, Lehigh, Case. (my peer groups aren’t based solely on academic rep…)

Comparing Tufts to a UIUC or a UT-Austin or Berkeley or Washington or UW-Madison is very difficult – apple and orange.

Class size and interaction with professors is closely related to academic quality.

same for BC and BU

should be ranked with Emory, Georgetown, USC

Just for reference @Luckyjade2024 goes to Tufts so take that with a grain of salt

true…not hiding that

I also turned down each one of those schools to attend Tufts

A while ago, Newsweek coined the term: “New Ivies”. Here’s the article with their list:

That’s a silly statement to make - depends on the major. While Tufts is ranked higher and is in a metro area, rank is not everything. I assure you many at Lehigh would be admitted to Tufts but chose Lehigh, perhaps for their engineering or better scholarships.

Tufts is a fine school but no reason to denigrate another fine school.

you are right…that was wrong of me to say. Lehigh was one of my choices as well, but I preferred Tufts.

Many? Really? They are not even overlap schools for the most part and truly accept a different level student. Point taken but hyperbole IMO.

Comparing Tufts to Emory, USC or Gtown is pretty funny to me. I think Tufts is a great school but most posters (who are a little less biased) have agreed that it’s relatively appropriately ranked. Tufts is great at certain fields like IR and Tufts Medical School is decent. Other than that, Tufts doesn’t have any earth-shattering (or even close) programs.

USC has Annenberg, Georgetown has SFS, Emory has Goizeuta and all of them are known for overall strong academics (Emory might not be the best for an engineer student unless you’re doing the super competitive GA Tech program). Most kids I know who went to Tufts went because they liked the environment and “Tufts-ness” of Tufts.

Lehigh SAT mid 50th%ile: 1350-1480
Tufts SAT mid 50th %ile: 1420-1550

There’s a lot of overlap here. The kid at the median of the Lehigh range is in the top 2% and the median kid at Tufts is in the top 1%. Arguing over the top 1-2% is splitting hairs.

At this level, other traits will come into play to determine future success. Ability won’t determine which kids are more successful.

I get your point, but it’s hyperbole IMO.

you’re joking right?

Tufts 11% accept rate for class of 2025
The pandemic contributed to a surge in undergraduate applications to Tufts this year—a 35 percent increase over last year,.
The class is the culmination of another highly selective admissions process, with Tufts admitting 11 percent of the more than 31,000 who applied. Acceptance decisions went out to applicants on March 30.

Lehigh 45% accept rate for class of 2025
For the incoming class of 2025 , there was an acceptance rate of almost 45 percent, despite an increase in applicants. Prior to the class of 2024, which had an acceptance rate of 49.5 percent during the onset of the pandemic,

We aren’t going to go down the path that higher test scores equal better students and/or higher potential students and/or that those with higher test scores get higher paying jobs are we? If so, cite your source for those assumptions.

The acceptance rate has little to do with the quality of the students who show up on campus. If Lehigh can draw a student body with its median in the top 2% of the nation from a smaller pool of candidates, that’s still its student body regardless of how many applied.

If that question is addressed to me (?), no, we’re not going down that path.

Funny.

In my world, a safer school, for a more competitive school, can’t be a true overlap school for another. I like Lehigh a lot, and SAT’s do not have much to do with it IMO. Tufts competes with Emory and Wash U. Lehigh is not that level these days. Of course Lehigh has some good programs. It is a good school.
