Should waitlisted students hold their breath?

I, like many CC-ers, am a waitlisted student. Today was rough. Nevertheless, Princeton is still my favorite school, and I hope that there is some hope left for getting in.

As our notification suggests, there is a possibility that no student will be taken off the list. However, I have read in numerous articles over the course of today that elite colleges are almost certainly going to see lower yield than usual (for instance, because of increasing economic difficulties, the trend of applying/being accepted to more schools, etc.).

Does anyone have any idea what our chances really are? Though I understand that this type of speculation isn't really an exact science, could some of us get in without a true miracle?

100 out of 5509.

i wish i had been waitlisted.

seems like a lot of the accepted students are going to other schools.

strompy: i figure ur makin this up???

“In addition to the 2,150 offered admission, 1,331 students were offered positions on the wait list, though only half of those students are expected to choose to stay on the wait list, as in past years.”

Yea I think he is. It’s more like 100 out of 1300.

are waitlistees ranked?

about 20 kids from my school were accepted and so far it looks like at least 5 are turning it down, so there’s five spots that should open up

They anticipate half of the waitlisted students accepting. 100/650 then, right?

^ unless they don’t need 100 of us :(

they’re expecting to take a lot off the waitlist from what i gather since there are a lot of cross admits…100/650 would be really good lol

I read last week in a college directory–think it was “365?? Best Colleges”…
that they had about 500 students waitlisted last year, and 10 got in.

maybe wait list will move more this year with bad economy…but not enough to make a material difference.

^^ no, last year 86 were accepted initially.

[Web Update: University admits 86 waitlisted high school seniors - The Daily Princetonian](http://www.dailyprincetonian.com/2008/05/12/21188/)

if you read on, she says more will be accepted, if the 86 dont take the offer.

i’m thinkin they’re taking more this year…they even said they “wish to use the waitlist” this year…100/650 would give us a 15.3% acceptance rate…better chances than we had before lol

^ i think more than 650 will accept…

well they approximate half will accept…and on the “Statement to Wait Listed Candidates” that i just got in the mail, they did say “After May 1, the size of the wait list will be in the range of several hundred and will change over the next few months as students make other plans…”

if they explicitly said they expect it to be “several hundred”, then 650-700 should be a good estimate? right?

Yeah Bicycle Kick. That sounds about right. Given their experience, I would think that their approximation should be close, at least.

Out of curiosity, did the “letter to waitlisted candidates” have anything interesting? I am still waiting for mine, but did it say what Princeton would like to receive or would not like to receive from WL candidates?

do they tell you your rank/number on the waitlist in the letter?

If they did, that would be the greatest thing ever. Somehow I doubt that they have it so well thought out…

among other things, they said

“The wait list is not ranked”

“We will have financial aid available to meet the full need of any candidate we admit from the wait list”

“You do not need to sendus any additional information unless it is “late-breaking news.””

“It is not necessary to ask for more letters of recommendation. We have everything we need in your file.”

Judging by the above statements, i’m guessing they don’t want anything from us unless it is significantly important
