I’m going into my senior year and I just started writing my essays. I am applying to four-year colleges as a nursing major and a couple of my essays directly reference/explain this fact while others do not. Would it be to my advantage to somehow tie my essay topic in to why I’m interested in nursing?
I think that you can make a good essay out of it, but there is also sometimes a school supplement that asks you to explain your major choice. EIther way, I’m sure you could make it into a great personal statement, but it may be riskier than other essay topics.
I should add that most of the schools I’m looking at don’t require an extra personal statement/“why this major” essay. I’ve been told that nursing specifically is kinda niche and you should explain so I was wondering
If nursing is a serious passion and you have a story about how it has shaped you, then perfect. It should make for an interesting essay.
@Katja2021 This is a great question – we recently covered this topic in a College Confidential article, which you can find here:https://insights.collegeconfidential.com/common-application-essay-make-strong-start
I’ve heard that you shouldn’t focus your essay so much on your major and instead focus on your personality because so many students end up changing their majors in college, colleges would prefer to get to know you instead of what you plan on studying
However, I feel that if nursing has been a passion of yours for a really long time and has shaped who you are as a person that is different and you can make a great essay.
Good luck!
