After several phone calls and e-mails requesting that my major be changed from humanities to undeclared, a simple change I presume, I have yet to be able to accomplish this goal. I assume it should be rather simple, considering I don't believe I would have to petition to enter this major as I may another major such as Biology. And now, I've been told that I need to attend a Tuesday orientation in Irvine, about 7 hours from my house, in order to make this change. Unfortunately, I'm working a busy 8-5 job at the moment where it is imperative that I'm present. In the midst of my frustration, I'm having second thoughts about attending UC Irvine at all...Has anyone else had this much trouble getting help from UCI administration? Has anyone else attempted to change a major and had any luck? Any advice?

It shouldn’t be that hard to switch into undecided. Just keep bugging them and explain your situation and it should be fine. However, if you have an idea as to what major you want to be in, just switch directly into that.

A. i dont see why you are making such a big deal about being undeclared. just stay in whatever major you are in and change to whatever major you want when the time comes. rarely will you be restricted for certain classes due to your major (rather, you will be given priority based on certain majors/schools…)

b. i tihnk you need to be in a certain school (humanities, social sci, whatever). you cannot be a free floater i think. is that what you are talking about?

c. dealing with people is always a pain over the phone. go in person and get answers. it forces the person you are talking with to give you their attention and if something goes wrong, you have a name and face to come back to. (ideally).

Don’t try to do these things over e-mails, letters, and phone calls. Take care of this once you’re on campus. There’s no need to hurry over these things, especially if you’re an incoming freshmen since your first classes won’t care what major you’re in.

On campus, it took me about 30 minutes to declare myself a double major, primarily because I had to walk to three offices, each in separate buildings.

Hey OP, I am in a VERY similar situation as you. Currently a BIO major, admitted to UCI as a business major. I’m trying to get BACK into business administration, but apparently I have to “apply” soph year, even though I can’t understand why they can’t take me back now, if they had accepted me as primarily a business admin.

Therefore, in order to complete the pre-reqs, I’m trying to switch to undeclared, and get out of my BIO classes. I don’t understand why we have to attend a ‘session’ to change majors. I talked to the Undeclared counselor on the phone, and she told me what to sign up for classes. What else needs to be done?!

I suggest you discuss your schedule with an Undeclared counselor over the phone, if you haven’t done so already. Also, try to get in contact with ‘Norma’ when you call the Undeclared office, she was very helpful and informative to me.
