sick kids?

Another thread got me thinking, what does OU do with sick freshmen that aren’t sick enough to be admitted to a hospital but are too sick or contagious to stay in dorms? Something like strep or mono? Do they have some sort of sick room or infirmary or are the roommates of these sick kids just expected to find someplace else to sleep until the antibiotics kick in so they don’t get infected?

I don’t know the answer, but it’s an excellent question. I will call Goddard tomorrow.

Per the Goddard Person: no infirmary. If the illness does not require hospitalization, the student is given an rx (if appropriate) and sent back to the dorm. The doctor may do a follow-up call to the student to see how she’s doing. The students can also call the Goddard Nurse Line.

Per Adam in Housing and Foods: The RA will not be notified by Goddard if a student has been seen. The ill student may ask the RA on her own to check on her periodically because she (student) is ill, but the RA has no access to medical information or medication. I asked if the RA could notify a parent (if all waivers have been signed) about a sick student; Adam said he was unsure about this and to make sure the roommate(s) have parents’ contact information for just such a scenario.

@HeliMom74 Thank for the info!

I’m still wondering what they do with a kid that is contagious?

There is no infirmary on campus. Goddard Man said students should either have their own health insurance or sign up for the school plan; if need be, they will be admitted to the hospital.
Regarding contagious kids: Goddard Man was not 100% certain, but he said he felt fairly confident there was no “quarantine” dorm area. He said the physician (we were talking about strep, as an example) would give the ill student instructions (“Don’t share cups” etc.), but that as far as he (Goddard Man) knew, there was no place for the non-sick roommate to officially flee.
