Ok, I need to rant. What is up with Middlebury’s 1000±student waiting list? I understand they want to fill the freshman class, but - in my opinion - having more than one thousand people as back-ups is just not right. Colleges should not be businesses - they should be all about education.

Agreed! I was one of the 1000+ at Middlebury AND Georgetown AND Haverford. Thankfully I didn't apply to WashU as well; I'm sure I'd have been waitlisted there too. It's so discouraging. It's like they're saying "Eh, I guess we like you, but it's probably not going to happen. Thanks for applying!" Ahhhhhhhhhhhh. At least BC liked me enough to accept me :)

I got waitlisted at Carleton, but it was arguably my forth or fifth choice.

This method sucks... I'll have to come up with a better one when I graduate from Harvard (deferred EA, btw... oh, well - we'll see what happens on the 31st).

They probably have a huge waiting list to see who really wants to go to their school. If someone isn't really interested in Middlebury, they'd probably drop off the list, and many people are bound to do so (especially if they hear they are just one of 1,000).
Don't get discouraged, and stay on the list if you really see yourself there!

You're right, kc... I still believe they should have a shorter waiting list, though (based on last year's numbers - about 1,000 students waitlisted, 680 who decided to stay on the waiting list and 76 admitted). I think applicants should feel that there is a real chance - not as though it's a long shot.

Yeah Georgetown, Middlebury, Haverford, and WashU all used their waiting lists EXTENSIVELY this year!

yeah, i got waitlisted to from tulane and uga. but i really dont give a flying *. because i am already off ga tech or morehouse( on a full ride **es!!!!!!)

Good for you, gatechboy! Congrats! I'm still waiting to see what the future has in store for me...

"Colleges should not be businesses - they should be all about education."

Unforunately, private colleges are still like businesses... or must run like one in order to survive.

That is definitely true of some schools, kfc, but certainly not of bigger, more prestigious colleges and the Ivies...
