I'm not going to go into much depth because it's a long story but I'm very sick (being tested for cancer) at the moment and I am on Home Hospital for the second time in the last year. This was not included in my Stanford app because I didn't want extra attention (a pity party) for being sick and also since last time I was on it was for a different sickness (yes I have a bad immune system lol). But now I feel like since I won't be at school for a few months, I should tell them about my interruption. Is this kind of update allowed? If so, do I write it in the form of an essay? Do I need to send them a note from my doctor? Where do I even send this in? Should I talk about the last time I was on Home Hospital (it was 2-3 months long in my junior year)? I really really appreciate any help I can get.

Also, should I send it to my other schools too? Im sorry i just posted about stanford because its my first choice haha

I wouldn’t notify until it is reasonably clear that your health will affect either the admissions process or your potential matriculation. How did you address the 2-3 months you were not in school your junior year?

You should have your guidance counselor address and the absence in their letter … that might take the pressure off of you to talk about it and also it will be seen as authentic coming from the school official.

@mom1996 my counselor unfortunately already sent in her letter a while ago

@justonedad it was only very briefly addressed in one of my essays, literally a sentence. my guidance counselor, though, did talk about it in her letter since I have a 504 plan and they had to notify them about that. But they don’t know about the current home hospital situation.

I was thinking to notify them because at 8 weeks, the home hospital instructor becomes your teacher on record and gives you your grades, so I’m almost switching schools essentially with a completely new teacher giving me my grades

I am sorry that you are ill.

If you are “almost switching schools” why notify now?

I was out for about six weeks senior year, for a week or two at a time. I told none of the colleges I was applying to, and never mentioned it.

Perhaps it would be best to wait, unless there is some kind of deliverable like first quarter grades that cannot be sent because of your illness.

I’d suggest keep positive, let the testing take its course, and see what happens. Don’t force the issue with Stanford until you have confirmation on what you will be doing, again unless Stanford needs some info you cannot provide.

Good luck on your application and with your health.

@rhandco thank you so much! that was very helpful i will wait on sending it in

(FWIW, I had surgery after freshman year, after missing a lot of time freshman year and narrowly missing incompletes and almost died from the surgery due to blood loss, and lost my voice for the whole summer. Luckily, I was better by the start of sophomore year No word to the college about that either, although other than my voice, I wasn’t otherwise incapactitated that summer.)

@imsoworried. I am also sorry to hear about your illness. You have received some excellent advice. I agree I would not draw too much attention to yourself and your illness unless it is absolutely necessary…

@gravitas2 thank you for your kind words, you have always been so helpful to uc CCers, especially on the Stanford threads!! im sure youve helped so many people on here, including me i will definitely wait and think before i throw this information on the AdCom haha

@rhandco oh my god i am so sorry you had to endure all of that!! it must’ve been so hard especially with you just starting high school but im glad you got through it! thank you for sharing that with me it definitely helps
