Siemens Research

Okay,

So I understand the first step is to get some sort of connection with a university. No problem, my dad works at UCI. Question is, (which he directly asked me), how am I suppose to do research on something that I have no experience in? Like say I want to go into engineering, and I want to do some research in a related field. I obviously as a high schooler don't have any grounding in the subject. So why would a college professor want to do research with me? (My dad is a CS major, so I wouldn't be working with him)

For those who have entered research contests, what was the way you went about it?
Also, are you just extraordinarily smart so you already had previous knowledge in the subject?

Thanks!

Please answer! Thanks. :]

do research if you don’t know the subject that well?

Well what I’m saying is what professor/ mentor would want you to do research without any prior knowledge?

well i think you should study up on the field you want to research on. that is the only way…not everyone who goes into research knows exactly what the hell they are doing
