*sigh* Yet another "chance me" thread XD

Alright, I need a bit of advice from the all knowing people of College Confidential. I am a bit of an unusual case, so I would appreciate some feedback. I am a fifteen year old Caucasian girl in my Junior year. The twist is, I am supposed to be a sophomore right now, but I have skipped a grade as of this semester; I'll be going to college a year earlier than the people I entered high school with. On top of that, I attend an Early College, so I'll have my associates degree when I graduate as well. So, in summary, I'll be entering college a year early as a Junior;you can see the unusual situation I am in. I would appreciate if you would read through my stats and just, well you know, tells me how my chances are! Any feedback, suggestions, advice, would be much appreciated!

SAT Scores:
Verbal: 650
Math: 430 (AHG! Kill me!)
Writing: 520
Total: 1600

I am going to take a prep course over the summer to get the scores (especially that god darn math score) up.

Extracurriculars

Theater: I do sound design for the local theater (both student and adult plays) and have my name on the playbills to prove it! I have done it for four performances and am working on two more currently. I also am involved in drama aspect of theater, but have yet to get a role.

Student Council: I am my class treasurer and am very involved.

Interact Club: I am the vice president and am also very involved; I have a near guarantee for president next semester.

Volunteer Work: I have about fifty service hours from the fall semester; I file paperwork at school and volunteer at the local no-kill shelter.

Other minor extracurriculars and hobbies.

Colleges I want to apply to:

Here's another twist, I can't receive financial aid, but I can't go to college without it (or at least, some of it); for me to even consider going to a school, it has to offer full or near full merit scholarships. Even if I can get into "any college I want" I have to seriously qualify for their merit scholarships as well. Also, I want to major in either International Studies (with an Asian focus), Asian Studies (If the college has it), or Japanese (a Japanese minor is fine too).

Western Carolina University (My ultimate fall back school and the only one within commuting distance.)

University of North Carolina at Charlotte

North Carolina State University

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Oglethorpe University

Emory University (My "strive for school"; the most elite school I think I can get a full scholarship to.)

So, what do you guys think? Do I have a chance to get full scholarships at any of these schools? Could I get scholarships at more "elite" schools? Any advice on how I can do better without killing myself from stress XD?

UNC-CH, you’ll need to get your SATs up. Your reading/math combination is almost unacceptable given.

Emory = high reach given your SAT scores.

Yeah, I know that my SAT scores need a lot of work. I know that I can get my math and writing score ups to at least a 600 and my verbal up to a 700.

UNC-CH: Reach
Emory: Reach

Try a test-optional school for a year or so and then transfer into UNC or Emory.

I don’t think transferring is really an option for me unless I do a double major; why bother transferring to a school if I would only be there for a year?

Le bump Also, I would like to add that I am bound to get really good recommendations and am planning on of those “big service projects” for the summer.

Le double bump Anyone?

You desperately need to get your SAT scores up. They’re way to low for some of those schools.

Wake Forest is not an option to you?

I suppose that Wake Forest could be an option, but my mom doesn’t want me to go (she figures its too far of a reach); I could probably convince her otherwise though.

As for the SAT scores, they’re low, I get it XD To be fair (or to use an overused excuse) I was sick when I took the test. I know I can get it up to where it needs to be and I have about nine months~a year to get them there. I know my math is horrible, and my writing isn’t too good either, but I’m taking Algebra II this semester and I’ll have half a semester~a semester of College Algebra done by the time I take it next. Anyone know any good SAT math prep resources in the meantime?

Like everybody said your SAT score is killing you. Your best bet for math prep is to just learn the math that is on the test really well (Algebra 1, Algebra 2 and Geometry), also if you have not already done so sign up for the SAT Question of the Day, it will get you more comfortable with the format of the math questions (which can sometimes be awkwardly worded).

yes, I think everybody has repeated it: your SAT score is pulling you down quite a bit. your GPA and class rank are very impressive. I am assuming you live in NC? well if you can get that SAT up a little bit, UNC-CH, while still extremely competitive, could be a possibility for you. the only other school I am familiar with here is Emory, and from personal experience I know that they are not particularly generous with aid, so that may be a tough one. regardless, best of luck and anything can happen!

bump Everyone, thanks for the advice! I know my SAT scores are bad, but is there anything other than getting them up that I could do to make my application really stand out?

WF does not take the SAT score into account… and not, it’s not a reach either.

You might consider taking the ACT. Several kids I know had better scores on that than on the SAT, and the ACT is widely accepted in lieu of the SAT.

Would also suggest broadening your list of schools if you are dependent on merit aid. Wake Forest, while test optional, does not award as much merit aid as some similar schools. There are threads on CC with lists of schools known for merit scholarships. Off the top of my head, Centre, Rhodes, Sewanee, University of Richmond would all be possibilities for you if your scores come up. If you are set on North Carolina schools, look also at Elon and High Point.

Agree with other posters that UNC-CH is as much of a reach as Emory with current scores and that Wake is not too far of a reach. With your prep course practice under your belt and testing on a day when you feel healthy, your SAT scores are bound to go up! Good luck.

Alright, I’ll consider Wake Forest if it isn’t as hard as my mom thinks  I am planning on taking the ACT and am going to start prepping for it soon. I checked Elon and High Point; High Point may be a possibility, I’m going to research it a little more. I’ve also been thinking about adding Agnes Scott College and possibly W&A to the list. Sewanee is also a possibility. Thanks so far for the help!
