I can't get worked up over students who are choosing to leave Stony Brook; we have too many students who are actually enjoying their experience here and want to get something out of it, so I'll focus on them.

-Chris

very exciting times for myself and i wish you all the best at stony brook even though it does SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!lolol take it easy

So, surehands, where are you going?

PS. Chris, I forget your position at stony brook, but why have you decided to get involved in these online communities (facebook/cc/etc) lately? I imagine to promote the school or something along those lines? I think it is nice that you are taking the time to provide information about the school and to contend some of the complaints about the school. I was wondering how, or if, you are using some of this critique to address the issues raised by the members here.

It is a tough position to be in where you are trying to defend the school's image amidst recurring censure. But at some point don't you acknowledge that if the same grievances are being cited over and over by students, they must be well founded? As far as I know, the SUNY system is not going to be restructured anytime soon, so I don't understand why the admistrative board wouldn't want do something to address these issues, which have been around for years.

The main thing I see is the lack of school spirit and satisfaction with the services provided by the school. I know it's unreasonable for a state school to become too selective, especially since sb is not a flagship school. But can't there be a proficiency test to verify that TA's are proficient in the language and perhaps more events over the weekends to maintain student interest? Also, the whole application feels very basic--there is no way to see verify the student's writing--all you virtually need is a HS GPA.

I don't know where I am going with this : )

frasifrasi i agree with you a 100% all these people defending SB god bless them but if i was to video tape all my classes that would prove my point...lolol maybe i should

I'm online because our students are online. One of the historical knocks on Stony Brook is that we're big and impersonal and you can't find anyone to help you. Well, guess what? Here I am. I get dozens of PMs here, and e-mails from both our Web site and my blog (<a href="http://www.theadmissionsblog.com)%5B/url%5D">www.theadmissionsblog.com)</a>. I can't do everything, but I can at least help students get to someone who can give them the answers they want.

Students who ***** and complain about this campus haven't done anything to improve their lot here. They're the students who find it more entertaining to sit in their rooms, or the SAC, and just complain that they're being given a raw deal, when they're walking past flyers of events on campus, or extra help sessions for their chem class, or a coupon for a local restaurant, or a club meeting, or whatever.

If you'd rather sit and complain and not do anything about it, then that's your prerogative; but don't paint our entire campus with that broad brush and not expect those of us -- students and staff alike -- who are really impressed with this campus every single day to just sit by and laugh and think you're just the coolest kid in school.

Yesterday, I spent a half hour visiting WUSB, our campus radio station. I was really impressed! They just had thirty students complete their fall training class, and they have so many students interested in the station that they actually have TWO feeds, their regular broadcast feed AND WUSB2, an online-only station where students can get started.

There's SO much to do on this campus that it's overwhelming. If you're too lazy or too morose to do it, then that's your problem, and I wish you the best of luck if you decide to leave.

As far as administration addressing student complaints, we're on it as much as we can. Remember, we are a big place with a big bureaucracy. You say SOLAR sucks? Guess what, we did something about it, and on December 10, we're rolling out a new SOLAR. (Link is on my blog.)

You think the food sucks? Well, we opened up a new Union Commons, which is awesome -- and cheap. And Wolfie's. And Starbucks should (hopefully) open by spring. And Roth Food Court is being completely rebuilt.

Housing's cramped? We're cutting off deadlines earlier this year, and we're building more housing.

Could we have some more spirit? Absolutely. That's why we started a marching band, and we have a dance team, and cheerleaders, and that's why we sell the red hat for five bucks, which can get you a promotion somewhere just about every day of the week. Understand also that we're still young; fifty years is still a bucking teenager in University Years. We have a long way to go, and we haven't built up the alumni network and name recognition that universities who have been around since the late 1800s have.

Meanwhile, you want spirit? Go to Strawberry Fest. Go to the Roth Regatta. Go to Homecoming, when we had several thousand students and alumni decked out and screaming their lungs out. Go to a Ballroom Dance Club meeting, where they have a distribution list of 400 students and sometimes can't find space big enough on campus to handle their meetings and practices.

You want sports success? Go see our roller hockey team, which is 14-0 and has beaten Delaware, UConn, Penn State, Rhode Island, Army (twice), Hofstra (twice), and Rutgers (twice). Go see our ice hockey team, who are in second place at 4-1. Go see our men's lacrosse team, who had a player (Kevin Crowley) selected to the Canadian National U-19 team.

Sorry for the rant, but it frustrates me when the negative stuff outweighs the positive stuff just because the negative stuff is louder.

-Chris

I want to know who hired my stats professor because who ever hired her is a moron

and if you think im the only one i will get the 110 students in the class with me to come on here and tell you how crappy she is

Do all suny's use solar or do they have different utilities?

it varies for all sunys
