Sigma Alpha Lambda

DS who is a college sophomore got a letter inviting him to join this organization. Apparently there is a local chapter at his U. Is this a ploy for money which essentially buys you a listing like the Whos Whos or is this a legit organization that is worth joining?

DS received a letter as well, I think he is at the same school (Northeastern)

I looked on their website and they do seem to be legit although perhaps not one of the most prestigious honor societies in the country - not a large number of members and many are state universities. They do offer some awards/scholarships to member students. According to their statement of purpose:

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

The purpose of Sigma Alpha Lambda is to:

To promote recognize, and reward academic achievement and provide members with opportunities for community service, personal development, and lifelong professional fulfillment.

To promote continued individual and Chapter-wide academic excellence and achievement through the creation of mentoring and collaboration groups from within the membership and in conjunction with outside resources.

To develop leadership skills through resources and life experiences and through member participation in community-based mentoring programs for the betterment of school-aged children in the community.

The Chapter Highlights found on the website included a highlight for the NEU chapter which was involved with a project called Jumpstart in 2004 where they painted a local school building, so perhaps this can be one way in which students can get involved in volunteer work? Not sure how active this group is on campus though...

scansmom, yup they are both at NEU. I saw the same information...it does sound like one way to get involved in volunteer work. The letter came here but I haven't talked to DS about it yet. Let me know what you hear and vice versa.
Anyone out there actually have a child who is a member?

My daughter is also a student at NEU and just received this letter to join. Just trying to check out if this is really legit and worth pursuing. Any current feedback is appreciated. I noticed the last posts are dated. Did your student’s join and what do they say about this organization? thanks

My child just received an invite to the SAL chapter at UVA. Just wondering also about this organization and its legitimacy. I could not find a chapter listed in the UVA website under student organizations, honorary or academic. Has anyone at UVA any experience with this organization?

for what it’s worth, from the wiki entry on SAL:

Sigma Alpha Lambda is dedicated to promoting and rewarding academic achievement and providing members with opportunities for community service, personal development, and lifelong professional fulfillment. Membership in Sigma Alpha Lambda is open to all undergraduate students who meet the national requirements of sophomore classification or higher with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. Membership is also open to graduate students who meet the GPA requirement for undergraduates.

Thanks, should have googled it first. 3.0 is not too impressive…

I just received an invitation from Sigma Alpha Lambda this afternoon. I am considering joining, but now I am uncertain. Please tell me if it is worth the $ 68. for a lifetime membership. I am a senior and my GPA stands at 3.62 out of a 4.00.
