Signed up for October ACT last minute. How should I prep?

Hey all - I just signed up to take the October 24th ACT in a last-ditch effort to be able to apply Early Decision to Brown, my absolute favorite school. I’ve already taken the SAT and got a 2230 composite w/ 680M 750CR 800W, but I had no idea that Brown also requires 2 SAT subject tests to be done by the October date (I’m signed up to do then in November) and am already signed up to do the October SAT. It’s too late for me to take the subject tests at this point, so if I just do SAT’s, I won’t be able to apply early. This is why I recently signed up to do the October ACT.

My hopes are that I will do similarly enough on the ACT that it will not impact my application - I have done a lot of prep for the SAT but none for the ACT. I am a strong CR/W person obviously but my math is a little iffier. Is this a good idea? What kinds of things should I be looking at considering that I have just under a month until the test? Anyone else with a similar experience? Any feedback is welcomed.

Hey! Are you sure that Brown won’t accept SAT subject tests if you took them at the Nov. 7th date? They’re just the subject tests after all and it’s not like they are necessarily evaluating your application the day you send it in. For the subject tests especially I imagine they would be a bit more lenient.
The ACT is pretty similar to the SAT, just the science section you definitely need to review. If you are good at critical reading, it shouldn’t be too hard actually. Just use the official book and go through the practice tests, and don’t let the big, long science words intimidate you! Also, the essay is very different from the SAT now, so definitely review that.

Other than that, I think you should be okay. You have a great SAT score.
Good luck, I’m applying ED too.

@ffina23 I think you do very well on the ACT. Your strong reading skills will help you.

Do not let the science scare you as it is mostly a reading test with graphs and charts. There are 4-6 prior knowledge BASIC science questions, but even if oy got those wrong you would score very well.

The best way to study for the ACT is to practice with REAL ACT tests. The 3rd edition of the Real ACT Book (Red Book) has 5 tests to get you started. They are old, but you will get a feel for most of the concepts. Then move on to released tests from 2013/2014/2015. Using the work throughs in the ACT Black Book is also very helpful.

*****DO NOT USE THE READING PROMPTS IN THE RED BOOK. Use the materials a at this link instead: http://www.actstudent.org/writing/enhancements/

TIME each practice session to simulate the real test.

English 75 questions in 45 min.
Math 60 questions in 60 min.
Reading 40 questions in 35 min.
Science 40 questions in 35 min

Score your test, and then review only what you got WRONG after each practice session.

I suggest the following schedule:

Take 1 section each week night/with review for 4 nights/week.

Twice per month on a Saturday or Sunday take a full ACT test/with review.

Track your progress!

Here is a detailed sample schedule to get started, modify it to meet your needs:

Mon: English section with review

Tues: Math section with review

Wed:. Reading Section with review

Thu. Off

Fri. Science

Sat/Sun Full test with review.

@HereToHelpYou thank you!! It means a lot to hear you think I can do well on it if I study hard

@ffina23 or you could just be like me and procrastinate on studying on the day before the act.

Juuust kidding. Don’t be like me and do that aha.

Also, critical reading was my strong point too, and I did fine (with minimal studying - with instense studying, you’ll do great). I’d for sure practice science to quicken the pace at which you read the graphs. @HereToHelpYou has definitely covered pretty much everything you’d need to do, so good luck!

I think you will too
