Silly question: What's a VISA?

What is a Visa? what do you need it for? And how do you get one?

Thanks!

The rules for getting a visa will vary from country to country and will depend upon which country your citizenship is from. Also, the reason for your visit will determine the type of visa you need (student visa, tourist visa, business visa, diplomatic visa, etc.)

My son needed a visa for his year abroad in France. It's quite a process, and involved lots of forms, some of them notarized, and several visits to the consulate in New York City. The consulate required the exact forms that they wanted, although it wasn't exactly clear exactly which exact forms they wanted. It was a frustrating process --

They also require a personal interview. Appointment only. Appointments made online in advance only. Can't have the interview too early. Don't leave it too late or you won't get your visa in time. And oh yes, you must pick up your visa in person at the consulate.

My advice: start early, and get going on the process ASAP. Ask questions of your study-abroad office and anyone else who has gone through the process.

Each country varies in their requirements -- which also seem to change a lot so your mileage may vary.
