What are some colleges that are similar to Davidson (academically, suburban-ish, East Coast) that are a bit cheaper? Are there any? I would like to stay in NC, SC, VA, KY, or TN

Hmm. There's really not many schools similar to Davidson. You might try William and Mary or Washington and Lee. Wake Forest is pretty similar, but the student body is pretty different (less selective and more conservative/frat-ish/preppy/etc.). Furman is also similar, but not on the same level academically.

Slightly less academically, but similar to Davidson - Sewanee (although definitely not suburban) and Rhodes.

Most of the top LACs are clones of each other.Davidson is unlike any other school I've visited. On paper W&L looks close, but in reality is very different.Williams,Dartmouth, and Princeton come close. For a guy Hampden-Sydney works.

how much you actually pay for your education at these schools will be dependent on how much financial aid you qualify for. Have you checked into this yet? Don't be put off by the sticker price if youf family is low income.

My family is that really annoying point that cant afford (and maintain a similar lifestyle) schools above 20k a year but colleges seem to think can afford everything

If your credentials are very good, Davidson might offer you some merit aid (not necessarily a large amount but enough to make a difference).

Even without merit aid, you should be able to afford it. My family only pays about $3000 a year thanks to fin aid.

Also, Davidson is really competitive, so getting a scholarship is hard. I've met people at Duke who got rejected by Davidson.

In KY, consider Centre. In SC, consider Wofford. Both are LACs and cheaper, but not on the same level academically as Davidson.

But the academic aspect is really important to me (I'm a bit of a nerd) Also, i like the fact that Davidson has a work hard party hard aspect to it...I'm just trying to prepare myself cuz I know the chances of me getting in with some kind of scholarship are verrrry slim

Tigers Rule, In your opinion what are the differences between Davidson and Washington and Lee? From our West Coast perspective,we thought them the two most similar colleges of the groups we visited, but that was mainly due to size, facilities, types of courses, peaceful surroundings and academic focus. Dartmouth surprised us with all the cars driving around - we had envisioned the campus as much more rural.

So far colleges i like are Davidson(of course) Vandy, Washington and Lee and USouth... The problem is the first three are a bit of a stretch and USouth is a safety. Are there any in between?

I thought that Davidson was completely different from every school I'd seen (Dartmouth, Brown, Harvard, Princeton, UVA, Washington and Lee, Williams, and Middlebury). I just thought that the student body seemed really open and friendly, and while they were all obviously really smart, were normal and talked about "normal" stuff rather than philosophy or something. Walking around campus, I just felt that it was someplace special. Just my thoughts.

Aside from the obvious geographical differences, the main contrast I encountered was the friendliness of the Davidson campus and town.My family and I strolled around the W&L campus on several occasions and not one person said hello. This surprised us after reading about their speaking tradition.Davidson,on the other hand, didn't play up its affability, but we were amazed at everyone's cordiality there. The Greek scene is the other main difference.

Did you visit the Tom Clark shop and the Soda Shop? They're both really cool to visit. I love the town of Davidson. :D

There are some academic differences too. Davidson's a lot more "intellectual" and liberal arts I think, while Washington and Lee has a definite pre-professional bent (it has a business program which Davidson clearly doesn't have)

im a english history(or gov) double major so im sure most colleges will have okay programs

Hillbille - look at Rhodes, particularly if you are in the merit aid category, stats wise. The problem is there aren't very many schools like Davidson, particularly in the South. Davidson has a strong athletic tradition, but among the athletes, and particularly the non-athletes, it attracts the most academically inclined, and the most academically "proven" - in other words, it has the pick of its traditional base, and since the overall population in the South is smaller, there is only one school like Davidson, as opposed to supporting a Williams, Amherst, and Dartmouth.
Centre, Sewanee, Rhodes, W&L, those are your main choices.
Why not Wm & Mary? It might actually be the closest in many ways, and you are in state. An Honors program at a larger state university might be another, more affordable choice. The overall atmosphere might not be the same, but in classes it would be similar, with the advantages of a large school.

Well of course i pick the one of the kind....I just found out that Davidson does your laundry. (which they should at 36K a year!!) which is just amazzzzing

Actually, Davidson is a little less expensive than some of the other similar schools in the north. The reason it provides laundry service is at least in part because many decades ago it took over a building in the center of campus and did not want to put the people employed there out of work: hence the laundry.:) Note that it also has washers and dryers in many of the dorms and that people also do their own laundry various reasons.
