Simmons College Families - join the discussion

I'm crossing my fingers that my daughter will choose Simmons. I am now a CC junior member and I am surprised at how quiet the Simmons community has been. We will be visiting April 11 for MOST weekend. Can someone tell me, either here or on a new thread, about internships, how to take classes at SMFA, where to get a creative first level computer science course, clubs or groups for theatre if you like set building, creative writing and the English dept

So much to ask. And we do love Sarah's you tube series.

Wow, that’s a lot of questions. (And Sarah’s youtube videos are great, haha.)

SFMA as far as I know is mostly grad courses. I know that some students in the art & music majors do occasionally take courses there but it’s an individual basis. For internships, the career center is pretty good about that - my friend is a first-year and she is already doing in internship! She said in her internship class (required for humanities majors) they practice interviewing, and the CEC is always open for mock ones and reviewing resumes. I’ve gone to them during drop-in hours for a leadership position and they were really helpful.

For theatre, COF performing arts is the place. They put on a show each semester.

Creative writing classes are the bomb. Fiction, non-fiction, and poetry, plus advanced classes. My friends in the English major love it and there’s a really good variety in classes considering the size of the major.

As for “creative first level comp sci courses”, they’re working on it. Simmons isn’t known for Comp Sci.

Thank u so much. Sounds like a strong recommend?

I’m obviously biased, since I go here…but yeah, I’d say it’s at least worth considering. It saddens me that Simmons gets a bad rap compared to the 7 sisters (we row against them and we don’t do too shabby, if that counts for everything). It definitely has a different atmosphere than other women’s colleges and IMO that’s not a bad thing. The location can’t be beat, that’s for sure.

I assume that is because there is no brother school. The focus that Simmons has on professional education historically seems to set it apart from the remaining five sisters. What is freshman housing like?

I currently live in freshman housing, and I intend on living in the same dorm next year despite having “better” options available. I just saw a thread that was worrying over the size, however I don’t think it’s an issue. I saw plenty of smaller rooms when I visited a state school and another private college.

My roommate and I live in the smallest room in our hall and we have a fridge, large wardrobe (in lieu of a closet), 2 sets of drawers and 2 desks, plus 2 floor lamps. The bathrooms are clean, the halls are clean, and the trash/recycling is taken out frequently. Our building is a bit older (1950s) but was renovated recently and is set to undergo major renovations in the next 5 years or so.

The only thing I can think of is the rare chance you get a forced triple (3 people in a double), but they put those students in larger rooms and they de-triple as fast as they possibly can. I know plenty of people that willingly chose to remain tripled because they liked their roommates more than they liked having more space. (Either way, they get a nicer lottery number for next year.)

Evergreen: Please report back about your MOST weekend. No detail too small.

@dyiu13. What a great time we had! 1. Boston weather was behaving. I did tell D not to take spring weather in April for granted. They went to Faneuil hall for a scavenger hunt. My shy D had a great time. 2. Her host was great. 3. Tours and activities were well planned and even I felt like I was getting to know the campus. 4. The mock psychology class sold D on the classroom environment 5. The food was great

I have met very focused students but I expect that they choose the best as ambassadors. But the women pure freshmen seemed like intelligent focused and accomplished young women that want to make a positive mark on the world. I couldn’t ask for a better cohort.

D hasn’t said yet because she wants to read the catalogue again but I think this is the one.

Evergreen, Thanks! Simmons also has an exchange program with other colleges. What a great way for a Simmons student to taste-test another school for a year:

Domestic Exchanges

Simmons offers domestic exchanges with American University’s Washington Semester Program in Washington, D.C.; Belmont University or Fisk College in Nashville, Tennessee; Mills College in Oakland, California; and Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia. Talk with your advisor if you would like to participate in the domestic exchange program.

Thank you for the info!
