Hi,
I just got accepted as a transfer to Simmons College and got deferred by Mount Holyoke.
I must admit I didn't pay as much attention to Simmons as I did to MHC. My biggest dilemma is: should I wait one more semester and compete again for a place at MHC or should I welcome Simmons into my life?
What is Simmons like and does it have a good reputation? What about their financial aid package? Academics?

I'm currently going to a community college and am a permanent resident.
I intend to double major in Neuroscience and Psychology and become a psychiatrist (so, I am filling pre-medical requirements). I am part of the Commonwealth Honors Program.
I withdrawn this last semester because a very close family member passed away. As much as I do not regret taking this time for myself and my family I am concerned that might compromise my acceptance.
I did not have the brightest high school transcript and this is due to family issues. I am legally responsible for a younger sister and have to take care of one of my parents.
My GPA is a 3.5.
I have applied to MHC and Smith 3 times. I was rejected by Smith again, and this time deferred by MHC. It is the 2nd time I applied to Simmons and this time I got accepted, but haven't heard from FinAid yet...

I really can't stand my college, but I would hold on one more semester if that meant being accepted to MHC. However, I am afraid I take this sacrifice just to be denied one more time.
Financial aid is crucial since my family makes less than 30,000/year.

do you qualify for Frances Perkins at MHC or Ada Comstock at Smith?

If you do one or two years at cc, you will probably have a better shot through one of these programs if you get your GPA up a bit (they like to see 3.75 and above).

Simmons is a fine school and close to lots of stuff in Boston as opposed to MHC and Smith which are much further out. I applied to both MHC and Smith as a first year but did look at Simmons closely. I would have no problem going to Simmons.

You might also talk to the FP people or AC people and ask them about what plan would be best for you (continuing at CC or going to Simmons). Both programs are known to have very friendly and helpful admissions people.

Many aspects of Simmons would be similar to MHC - empowerment of women, encouragement, leadership, small classes, personal attention, etc. Admission profile is lower at Simmons, and there may be more emphasis on professional programs (nursing, PT, business) and undergraduate research (I’m not familiar w/ MHC).

Simmons is a member of the Colleges of the Fenway which is a total of 6 colleges with over 10,000 students who can cross-register at the other schools and share activities. Simmons has about 1,800 undergraduates and a coed graduate school of 2,700. Simmons is located next to the huge Longwood medical complex.

A few people have commented on C-C that Simmons is not great for FA. I don’t think SC has much of an endowment, although for a private school in Boston, it does offer merit awards.
