I'm posting this because the Simmons College forum is pretty inactive --

Is anyone here familiar with the Kotzen scholarship from Simmons which covers full tuition, room and board, + an additional stipend for internship/study abroad? -- It really is a phenomenal scholarship and I'd love to be the recipient of one but there is very little information on the internet regarding the statistics of people who have received the scholarship before - only information on the minimum requirements. Even trusty old CC has failed me. :( Woe is me.

Could someone perhaps provide insight from their own personal experience or perhaps that of someone they know who received the scholarship - what their stats were/how many scholarships are doled out/etc - honestly, anything constructive would be of great help because there is next to nothing about the scholarship online other than the min. requirements (1850 SAT, 3.3 GPA, Enrolled in Trig/PreCal or beyond, Multiple Honors and APs).

Call Simmons Admissions and ask to speak to someone about the scholarship. It doesn’t hurt to show interest and you may be more information.

@Bromfield2 - The information I’m looking for isn’t really something that Simmons Admissions could talk to me about - I was trying to find previous statistics of former winners so I can see what my chances are in context - all Simmons will give me is information I’ve already seen on their website/literature/etc.

I happen to know all of the recipients in my class (2017). I actually live with a Kotzen Scholar and the rest live on my floor. Those who received it are phenomenal students - well above the minimum stats listed. To put it into perspective, one of the girls is a double major in English and Women’s Studies, takes an extra course each semester, is already doing an internship, and has a 3.98. She was also a QuestBridge Scholar.

Another is a double-major in biochemistry (which in itself is basically a double major) and English, is on a sports team, maintains a phenomenal GPA and is planning on taking a summer course at Brown.

My other friend (my beautiful and incredible roommate) is a nursing major who is taking an extra course to fulfill a minor AND with her stipend is travelling to South Africa not once, but twice this summer with both the college (a study in human rights with a leading expert on the subject) and with her summer church project (tutoring).

Also, they are all in the honors programs, which means even more required classes.

Yes, this does not speak to their HS stats, but it should speak to the kind of students these ladies are. The second girl I mentioned was torn between BC, BU, Tufts, and Simmons with significant aid at all of them. The rest could’ve gone anywhere they wanted, most likely. (But you don’t generally talk about HS when you’re in college.)

I imagine that by now you’ll be hearing back soon, and I wish you the best. But there will likely only be 3-6 Kotzen Scholars, and few of them will ever talk about it.

@dancegrl - I did not receive the scholarship, unfortunately - but ironically enough, I’m deciding between schools similar in calibre to what you mentioned (Brandeis Honors Program, Accelerated Masters at Northeastern, Boston University) – but alas, Simmons did not deem me qualified.

Ah, I’m sorry to hear that. I did hear that they would be offering fewer scholarships as so many in my class received them. I saw from your posts that you’re a very strong student, so you’ll be fine wherever you end up. :)
