Simons Summer Research Program 2016

Did anyone apply for Simons 2016 program? last year around this time, some people said they got likely letter, did anyone
receive a likely letter yet?
Thanks.

Got my acceptance email! So excited :))

congratulations. I am in waiting list

@eychang hi, I am applying to the program this year, and i was wondering if i can get any information about the acceptance rate, the program itself and how important setting up a mentor is before the application! thank you so much

@kauk Hi! Acceptance rate is approximately 12%, but they favor students from New York and one school is only allowed to nominate three students, so in reality the acceptance is much lower because applications are already “pre-selected” so to speak at the school level. Simons is a summer research program, where you work in a lab almost independently investigating a research question. At the end of the ~7 weeks, you create a scientific poster to present your findings. Most students go on to write research reports with their work and submit to competitions such as Intel STS (now Regeneron STS) and Siemens. I didn’t set up a mentor prior to application, but many did… I honestly didn’t see much of a difference. On the application, you have to look up the school anyways to select the top 5 labs you want to research in, so you have a bit of choice already there.

If you have any other questions about Simons, feel free to contact me!

@eychang Whoa that’s really selective. My friend Ryan was at Simons last year, do you know him?

@eychang Did you receive a likely letter last year before your acceptance? If you did, around what date? Thanks!

@Ninjadu I don’t believe so, but I know a couple of the people that went to the same camp as me did! I think it was a just a couple days before, but I’m not too sure myself.
