<p>You don’t succeed with something, you succeed in doing something. It’s an idiom question.</p>

<p>A colon would be strange in that example, I don’t think you should use one at all there.</p>

<p>“The time and place” is idiomatic if one is talking about an appointment, for example. “The time and the place” is conceivably correct in other circumstances, however.</p>

<p>If you are talking about them a unity – a couple – “boy and girl” would be idiomatic. In other circumstances, to maintain parallel construction, you would put a “the” before both.</p>
