Simr 2011

@stanfordduke

Did you get in? If so, what can you tell us about the program?

@drumwriter22 and harvard76

I’m surprised at how many of us applied from out of state. I kind of assumed I would be one of very few to do so. As far as housing goes, if you’re 18 you can apply for housing at Stanford itself. If you are not 18, it is a little more complicated. SIMR states that you must be 18 to apply for housing at Stanford; however, the housing website for Stanford appears to have programs and residents who are not over the age of 18. I plan on sending an e-mail to clarify.

In terms of apartments outside of stanford, but in close proximity–there are a few. You’ll be paying around 900-1700 a month though and short-term contracts are rare.

Keep me up to date if any of other out of state applicant happens to find housing at reasonable rate.

Does anyone know what the cut off is for SAT scores and GPA?

My GPA is perfect still, but my SAT score has me worried.

@drumwriter22

I’d say better than most. Your GPA and SAT scores are solid, you have prior experience in a summer program, and you’re first generation.

However, if you read what prior SIMR participants have said regarding the application process, nearly all of them stressed the importance of the essays.

I wouldn’t count yourself out quite yet, but a 6-9% acceptance rate does not look hopeful for most of us.

Apartments in Paly are quite hard to find unless you’re looking for one in EPA which isn’t… the best part of town and a significant distance from Stanford. In Paly, you’ll find small houses for rent at about $1500-$2000/month and you’ll be fighting tooth and nail against parents who are looking to move there for their kids’ education.

I only have a 3.93 UW :confused: I had an 89.4 freshman year b/c of the stomach flu and a B in AP Chem, but I think a pretty solid letter of rec from my AP Chem teacher who also taught me last year in honors chem. Hopefully the two will balance each other out :confused: However, I have been taking the most rigorous courses at my school (5 weighted this year out of 6 max, Spanish 3 is unweighted). I have yet to retake my SATs which I took for the first time in Oct and got a 2190. I’m quite worried about that. I live about 15-20 minutes away from Stanford. Only about 2 more weeks until we know ! D:

would anyone be willing to get an apartment together if we get in? i mean, i know this is too soon to decide but i just wondered. i am 17, too young to apply for campus housing…

So I went against their warning and called them before decisions come out because I needed to respond to another program as to whether I could go. I was rejected- did not make it past the second round of cuts (do not know how far that really is). Its ok because I think it wouldof been hard getting housing in palo alto. Anyways they said over 1000 kids applied so its harder to get into than rsi essentially. Anyways good luck to all of you guys

i’m so tempted to call !

They expressly say not to in their brochure so I wouldn’t unless you really need to know. For all we know they couldof just cut me because I called. I doubt it but I would not take the chance

That’s what I was thinking too. Oh wells, I shall not risk it ! :/

ender94 - where are you headed?

Rockefeller University’s Summer Outreach Program in NYC. I am pretty excited since I have never been there for more than a day and now I am spending my summer there!

@drumwriter22

I absolutely would, but I too am 17 so that probably does not solve any issue there.

@ender94

Both sorry and congratulations; the Rockefeller program also sounds interesting.

OVER 1000 students applied? With only 40-45 accepted? A 4% acceptance rate is worse than any actual universty acceptance rate.

That is insane. Did whoever you spoke with say anything more (especially regarding the round process)? Just so the rest of us can ponder our chances, what are your credentials? I’m assuming that with your involvement in the other summer program you are fairly qualified.

I, too, already took a interview for another program because I knew this one would be almost unattainable; yet, for some reason I thought it wouldn’t be THIS unattainable. Things look grim now.

They did not supply any other information other than the “a lot of well qualified people applied.”

My stats are not that good but not extensive but I hope I make up for it with my essays although I had a hard time with the diversity one.

psat- 212 sophomore year (sick junior year) (I also just took march sats)
780- math sat II’s
calc bc- 5 ap lang- 4
4.0uw/4.7 weighted- tied for 1st

2nd place essay contest
lots of community service with leadership

Good luck everyone!

@smithevan12: That’s what I thought ! I was thinking 50 out of 600/800 is a super low acceptance rate, but an approximately 5% acceptance rate? That’s just terrible ! And ender94’s weighted GPA is much higher than mine :confused: but my school places a lot of restrictions on the courses we can take. Hopefully the competitions I’m involved in help me stand out? A little? Fingers crossed !

i really hope they accept more than 50 people this year. because around 30 people applied from my school ALONE and half of them have 4.0 uw and 2300+ >.< i am looking hopeless.

Hey guys! Good luck with SIMR! I was one of the interns last year and this is one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. You will love it so much :)

I don’t want to be pesimistic, but I am nearly certain I did not get accepted. I guess I can’t know for sure quite yet but I have basically lost all hope. Good luck to everyone else who applied.

Wow, so sorry to hear that ender94. Looks like our chances of getting in have really diminished this year. I do not feel like I am not any more qualified than you. My essays were not great at all… But congrats on your other summer program! I can’t wait for April 8th…less than two weeks now! I’m so nervous! Where else did everyone apply?

The Cleveland Clinic Foundation

hey, as soon as one of you guys gets something, post! getting a bit nervous too…

i applied as well, i’m a student from new york… does anyone know the profiles of students that have been accepted in the past? i wonder if they prefer in or out of state…
