Simultaneously majoring in Business and Economics

So I've been fortunate to be accepted into Berkeley, and I can definitely say there's a good chance I'll come here. I was admitted to the College of Letters and Science, and I'm intending to declare myself as an Econ major as soon as I can. I also want to possibly major in Business as well.

Some questions (I'm hoping others from CC might benefit from these):

About getting a degree from the L&S college in general: I see i need to take 7 Breadth courses--can I spread those out over my four years or do i have to complete those in a certain number of semesters? And I notice a lot of the breadth courses are 4 units each. Is it common to take 2-3 unit breadth courses? Are there usually plenty of spots open for those?

Is there any reason not to declare myself as an Econ major extra early? I've taken a long look over the pre-req's, and I've figured that if I play my cards right, I can apply for the major in the second semester of my freshman year. Any thoughts on this?

I notice there are some "core upper-division business courses" I need to take to graduate with a Haas degree (aside from the pre-req's, which are pretty similar to Econ's). However, there are also some lower division Business courses...do I need to take all of those before I can take any upper division courses?

i’d highly appreciate any current students/grads of the Econ or Business programs to answer, please. Thanks for any and all help.

you can spread the breadth courses over the four years. Often, other courses you take will also be counted to satisfy a breadth.

For example, any economics course at all will also satisfy the Social and Behavioral Sciences breadth. Some of your upper division electives (of the five you need for the Econ degree) satisfy the International Studies breadth.

There are other requirements of the UC system, of all colleges at Cal, and of L&S besides the breadths. Also max unit requirements, minimums of UD units and minimums in the college of L&S and minimums for UD out of the econ department. At CalSO your advisor will go over the some complex set of requirements but most of these can taken as you wish over the course of four years.

Cal requires you to take the intermediate economic theory prereq class (Econ 140 or Econ 141) here, not accepting CC or AP or other credits, and for all practical purposes the same for the one semester statistics requirement, but the other pre-reqs could be satisfied by AP, CC or other means. Once you are enrolled in the last of the five pre-req areas (1 year calc, 1 semester stats, Economics 100/101A, Economics 100/101B and the intermediate theory class), you can declare yourself as an econ major. Need a 3.0 GPA in those prereq classes and they figure in the GPA from any taken at CC or other colleges.

how does one simultaneously be at two locations?

Well when you’re doing two majors in the L&S college, apparently it’s called double majoring, whereas doing two majors in separate colleges is called simultaneous majoring.

Do any students/grads of Haas have any answers to the original post? Or perhaps any Econ/Biz simultaneous majors? Thanks.

For Haas, you must finish your breadth classes, RC, and prereqs by the end of sophomore year :)

If you fulfill the econ reqs, then you just need to take UGBA and a extra Lit course + finish breadth and RC req for Haas :)

A more common strategy is focusing on getting perfect grades in your pre-Haas classes and using Econ as a fall-back major. (Not that Econ is super easy to get into)

Hey thanks for the answers/advice guys!

Another question: I was admitted to the College of L&S. I marked “Economics” as my intended major. I’m pretty sure I’ll major in Econ if I go to Berkeley. I am not “pre-business.”

But if I also wanted to major in Business, I wanna know: Do officially “pre-business” students have any sort of advantage in getting enrolled in classes and etc?
