I have a 3.25 GPA, and a 24 ACT (retake score pending). I have recommendations from teachers, a University of Michigan-Dearborn professor, and a few people in the Michigan House of Representatives. I have 100 volunteer hours. I am Captain of the Varsity Wrestling Team and on the JV Cross Country Team. I had an internship in the House of Representatives and an internship with the University of Michigan professor. I was on Student Council and received a Leadership Award, a Science Fair Honorable Mention, a Varsity Letter Award, and I am on the Honor Roll. I also have taken several honors courses and a very challenging college prep curriculm. I am also a michigan resident.

Michigan State University
Indiana University Bloomington
University of Maryland College Park
University of Massachusetts Amherst
University of California Santa Cruz
University of California Santa Barbara

Are these schools reaches, matches, or safeties

is 3.25 your unweighted or weighted GPA?

and almost any UC's are reaches for OOS students with less than stellar [3.75+] GPA/test scores. And they are EXPENSIVE as well for OOS students. Plus housing costs -rent or otherwise, aren't cheap here in Calif!

I have them listed as reaches but are they unreasonable. I mean could you see a student with my stats being accepted there.

let me rephase would they be worth applying to

In my opinion, NO.

why don't you have UM on your list?

im already into UMich through massive connections (the Dean of Admissions was at a dinner party at our house recently) but I really dont want to go there. I realize you or others might not understand that but I have my reasons. As of now its a saftey school (I personally find that ironic).

I would start another thread on the parents forum, and title it" asking for college suggestions for a michigan student-athlete, 3.25 GPA/ 24 ACT". Then just copy the info you gave above in the body of the thread. Asking for "chances" on the parents thread will not tap into the incredible wealth of knowledge many parents here have, as "chancing" someone is not something most parents will do[ pretend to have an ability to predict the future]
I also suggest you let us know what you are / are not looking for in a college.

agree with menloparkmom--you'd have a hard time getting into UCSB and UCSC even if you were a CA resident. You could look at the Cal State system if you are serious about getting into a CA school--but out of state costs would make it expensive.l

I honestly was not very serious about. I know very little about the University of California system. I have two friends applying and they told me to. I decided to humor them but they are by NO means going to influence my decision on where to go to college.

I also suggest you let us know what you are / are not looking for in a college.
Soooo?? A little more info? Or were you only interested in your" chances" at the above mentioned colleges?

I am looking for more colleges to look into

Why not look more south-Texas schools for example

I think California and Maryland are reaches.

I think you have a good chance at Michigan State and IU-Bloomington.

The one tipping point would be varsity wrestling. I'm afraid I don't know enough about the sport or athletic recruiting to know if it could get you into one of those reaches but they seem like high reaches to me.

how much of a reach would Maryland be

I am expecting at least 1 to 2 raise on my next ACT

According to the most recent UMd Common Data Set, most students submitted SATs but this was the distribution of accepted students:

According to the CB, that 24 is the equivalent of an 1110. If you brought it up to a 26, it would be the equivalent of an 1180.

As you know, youneed to get the ACT score up - luckily you still have some time. Focus on that this summer. Applying to UCSB or UCSC would just be a waste of $ - may want to look at the newest UC - UC Merced if really want to apply to a UC. Kids around here who do not get into UCSB seem to like Cal State San Marcos as there back-up.
Give us more info on what you are looking for in a school to get more recommendations.

I intend to go pre med with a major in micro, cellular, or marine biology and a minor in the classics or philosophy. I like the school to be large at least 15000. Also I like the campus to be pretty nice and large. Also I want the school to be recognizable and not looked upon negatively on a med school application.
