Chance me if you're kind enough...

I'll probably apply as early as possible this fall b/c Michigan is DEFINITELY my first choice

GPA: (the part that stresses me out) 3.3 "Michigan" GPA, 4.2 weighted
Class Rank: Top 10%
I've taken all honors courses though, and this year I'm taking 2 AP classes, which is the max at my school. Next year, I'm taking 5 AP's. The problem is, freshman year i got all A's, but soph. and junior year I've gotten A's, B's, and 2 C's total.

SAT: 800 Critical Reading, 800 Writing, 720 Math, 1520/2320
ACT: 34
PSAT: 227 (almost 100% will be National Merit Semifinalist)

I live in a large city in the Midwest (not Mich), go to a fairly competitive suburban public high school

EC's-
All-State Orchestra- 9, 10, 11
My city's Youth Symphony (highly competitive)- 10, 11
Section leader in school's Symphonic Orchestra
Science Olympiad- 9, 10, 11 (a couple medals at state competition)
NHS, Tri-M, Mu Alpha Theta member
Member of school's Investing Club
Model UN- 9, 10, 11
Cross Country team- 9, 10
Tennis team- 11
Racquetball team- 9, 10, 11

I tutor other kids at my high school
Volunteer at local park during the summers (not sure how many hours exactly)
Volunteer in Special Olympics- 9, 10, 11
Job (kinda)- I teach violin and have a couple students (little kids)

Should I retake the ACT to see if I can get a 36? I'll try to raise my GPA first semester senior year, but my Michigan GPA is still pretty low. Be honest about my chances. Thanks!

Your ACT is great. You gotta get that gpa up!

I would say you have a fairly good shot at getting in.

I think Michigan highly prefers a high GPA over high test scores… So it doesn’t look good for you.

From out of state, I would think it’s very unlikely unless you can get your GPA up quite a bit.

that GPA is going to hurt. i would say reach.

Definitely a Reach.
you’re gpa is way too low to even stand a chance, but with your ACT and class rank, you have a very slight chance of getting in.

senior gpa is not counted unless you get deffered. if you can get a 4.0 then you may a better chance of admission as a defferal.

If I get deferred and get a 4.0 UW first semester senior year (which I’m pretty sure I can do if I don’t slack off), what are my chances of finally being admitted? I heard Michigan doesn’t accept that many deferred?

If you are in-state and apply early, then I would think that your chances aren’t that bad, even with a low gpa. I know plenty of kids with 3-3.4 GPAs get in because they had their applications done early.

I find it hard to believe that there are plenty of kids with 3.0 GPA’s entering Michigan. Unless of course they are athletes or artistically inclned…

or they went to IA.

match.

gpa is pretty bad, but you’re taking the hardest classes available, which is just as important. plus, you’ll be a national merit semifinalist. and your ec’s are great. I think you have a pretty good shot.

u MIGHT get deferred, but that’s no big deal if u get good grades for your fall senior semester. I had a 3.3 too, and a 32 ACT and was deferred. I wrote a letter about how i messed up my grades sophomore year and I had since matured and have earned competitive grades. They took that into account and as soon as they saw my senior grades, they accepted me. That was in February, however most deferrals get their decisions in April. Although, u still have a chance getting in right away i would think

“or they went to IA.”

Yeah. :</p>

I just posted on another thread, my son was deferred and then waitlisted with a 33 ACT, and a 3.7 GPA OOS (don’ t know what his Michigan GPA was but was probably slightly better cuz his freshman grades were his worst). He’s math tutor for his school, varsity athlete wtih 2 sports. But you have more AP course. He applied early action. Sort of similar to you…

I would work on the ACT score if I were you…its too late to bring up your grades, unless you are deferred and they want 7th semester grades.

lol. i think he’s got that ACT down, he can’t really go much higher.

so basically, I’m probably going to be deferred. but as i said earlier, if i get a 4.0 seventh semester, am I likely to get in afterwards?

Talons, do not despair. First, in answer to your question, a trend up definitely helps so do what you can to get it (my s. did same and it made a difference.) Make sure your guidance counselor sends your mid term marks a.s.a.p. in senior year – don’t worry at all about the ACT, focus on a 4.0! What these boards CAN’T tell you is how well your school is regarded and what the track record is of admitted students from your school. And admissions evaluates your gpa relative to the rest of your school (you’re in the top 10% already!)and relative to the quality of other schools. SO, there IS the odd case where someone with an otherwise stellar profile with a low GPA DOES get in, and maybe it will be YOU. Apply early, write great essays, and get great recommendations.

ALSO…given your musical background, is it the School of Music you’re applying to? Or LSA. If, for example, you were applying to SOM as long as your GPA is over 3.0 (base minimum to prequalify for an audition) you could conceivably get in (with a competitive audition.) Make sure you discuss your musical accomplishments in your application even if it’s to LSA only. Adcoms know that top music students, such as those in All-State or teaching violin, really have to juggle when they’re taking a rigorous schedule.

So take the advice you get here on this board with a grain of salt. The numbers do not tell the whole story, and the admissions dept. seems quite holistic in my view. (My s. was admitted to both LSA and SOM with a statistically below-average GPA.) Just know that you really have to compensate for the differential. And I mean, REALLY : )
Good luck!
