Singaporean connection

Hey, I stumbled across the website <a href=“PSC | Home”>PSC | Home;

that there’s this ministry internships available for post-A level students. Enquired about it, but it doesn’t seem to avail itself to marginalised people like myself who has got to do National Service.

Anyone has had any experience with this? It does seem quite promising - a rewarding experience altogether. Any idea on how selection is done?

Check out the page bottom.

Hi I am applying with my predicted grades…I may get a A for physics B for maths and C for chem…nothing great in ECA SAT score is 1980…so can you pls suggest where can I get in US or UK…I am thinking of applying to 6 colleges…so can you pls suggest some colleges where I can get in?

What are you interested in? School size? Location? Financial Aid?

predicted grades or prelim grades more important? I did badly for prelims and ended up with Ds and Es but my predicted grades will probably look better- probably not straight As but As and Bs. Im not applying to the typical ivies + ucs most singaporeans are applying to but if they just look at my prelim grades then I’m really screwed.

Predicted grades play a more significant role because Universities in USA know that Preliminary examinations are out to be a final warning to students to buck up for the A’s. They look specifically at Predicted grades. This was said by a few admissions officers during a recent dialogue session. Hope that helps. :)

Haha I think universities use prelim results to draw (academic) distinctions between the top students. Don’t you think so?

I didn’t apply with predicted grades, but no way I would have felt good about applying with prelims + predicted grades. I jumped five grades between prelims and As, which is common at my school, but you bet there were people who applied with the same predicted grades and better prelim grades. Predicted grades are only useful if the US colleges have seen a trend over a period of time from the same school, which isn’t true for many of us.

While admission officers’ policies tend to be to first look at predicted grades, there’s also the issue of how much credibility they will place on your teachers’ judgment of your predicted grades, when juxtaposing it against your prelim grades. Despite how much one might argue that Prelims are meant to kill and whip students into shape so that they will naturally get straight As and Bs for the real thing, this argument is ultimately based on a hypothetical and speculative premise and is hence lacking in persuasiveness somewhat. The fact that people tend to score better in A Levels than Prelims should not be used as a form of self-consolation regarding the strength of one’s application (at least, the academic part of it).

Also, as mentioned earlier, the emphasis on predicted grades vis-

ok thanks for the reply, I’m not applying for those schools though. If I’m applying to lacs which are not very popular with singaporeans- will colleges be familiar with the prelims/ a levels thing? I know I’m not the best academically especially since everyone in school is pretty much the best in sg but the prelim grades look really bad.

i think the most important thing you should do now is to work on your application.

Make it clear in your application why you want to go to those LACs you have mentioned, and why they are a good fit for you.

If you do not have stellar results, try to show how, nevertheless, you are academically capable and compatible with the school. This can be reflected through your teacher recommendations, which may review an academic aspect of you beyond your grades.

Do a unique, compelling essay. These LACs, being less well-known, place an even larger premium on unique, promising people and your essay is the best and most direct way to convince them.

Thanks for the replies guys…for further details…I am not applying for financial aid as my parents are funding me…I am not applying for ivies also as I will not get in so I am looking for colleges which can take me in…I am applying for mech engineering and am not bothered abt location and size. My predicted grades were A B and C and my SAT score 1980 and I dont have any great ECA record…so pls tell me which colleges can I get in …my colleges has restricted me to apply for only 8 colleges in US…so I want to apply for atleast 2 sure get in colleges…I am also applying for 5 UK colleges can anyone suggest 5 colleges in UK for mech engineering?

I just took my SAT Reasoning Test yesterday; I’m not sure about some details regarding the sending of the score reports to your target colleges though so could anyone help me out here?

If I haven’t applied or the applications aren’t open for that college yet can I still request College Board to send the report through the site?

Following from the above, how long would the college keep the report? Some of them don’t defer places for males serving NS so I’d probably need to send the actual application later. Will my score report be wasted if I send it this year?

Thanks

@rimisisu:
1: Yes.
2: Depends on the school. For large schools like UC Berkeley, they don’t keep the score record beyond one year. For other schools, they keep it for longer.

Hey guys,

I would really like honest feedback from seniors and current college students in the USA about whether I should submit my Promo results? Currently, I am sending only my Sec Prelim, O’level, PW and predicted A’level grades.

Im wondering about my promo results.

I’ve got:
Math H2- A
Phy H2 - B
Chem H2- B
Econs H1- C
GP H1 - D

I got 54 and 59 for GP and econs respectively, so I missed out on the next grade by just 1 point. But do you think this results will really look good if it were sent along with my other results which has better grades?

Thanks

if i were you i wouldn’t send the results. if you have other sets of results that are noticeably better, then just submit those. besides, promos is the least impt of all your results (as compared to a lvls, o lvls, prelims) so it won’t affect your application significantly if you don’t send it.

where’s everyone ED-ing to this year?? :)

Hey fellow SG-er,

I actually haven’t made a decision yet. Should be CMU!

Btw, can you early action as well as ED?

How about you then SGHopeful?
