SIS: does Windows/Mac matter?

AU’s Office of Information Technology says that most of the University leans to Windows but will support either platform, but also suggests that you contact your specific school or college to ask whether they prefer one platform over the other.

I will call SIS on Tuesday to see whether I can find someone there who can answer that question, but I am also interested in the experiences of SIS students or recent graduates, if I can find any.

Does anyone have any personal insight into whether computer platform matters at AU generally, or in SIS in particular?

It would really only make a difference in SOC (mac) or Kogod (windows) where they use specific programs that work better on one platform. For SIS it makes little difference, especially as there are both types of computers available on campus should there be something you need that’s not available on yours (both SOC and Kogod have specialized labs should you take classes there).

There are a lot of students who use both types of computers on campus and the IT folks can help you with either, and both work equally on the campus network (there used to be a security program that was slightly more annoying on windows, but that’s being phased out this summer), so it’s totally dependent on your personal preference and budget.

Thanks, Sir J.

You should be fine with either operating system.

Aside from Kogod (and even then not so much any more) – the student body leans heavily towards Macs, while the campus owned computers trend Windows aside from the Mac computer labs.

I will say, regardless of my personal preference of OSes, that setting up the campus’ security system ‘Clean Access Agent’ is worlds easier on a Mac than it is on a Windows.

Nice to know. Thanks.

Clean Access Agent is being phased out this summer for a new NAC (network access control) program that doesn’t require a login (which is where it was slightly more annoying to use on a windows computer), so that’s a non-issue.

Wow I’m out of the loop. That’s an excellent choice on the University’s part, CAA was horrible.

Glad I could get you back in the loop :)
