Whooo-hoo!!!!

But wow...the site is like completely down (I think the security still authenticates though). I could actually access it this morning, but now it's just inaccessible.

Hey guys, so sorry for all the trouble. We are all down in NYC for the College Board Conference and the site decided to have trouble with load distribution (MyMIT runs on a bunch of servers - more than enough power for 10,000 of you to apply all at the last minute, but only if the load is distributed properly). Hopefully it's all good now.

I know the site was down for less than a day but we are still extending the deadline by 3 days (to November 4) to compensate you for the frustration you must have felt while the site was down.

Yes, this applies to all apps, either paper or online.

If you have further questions, feel free to ask. I have limited internet access down here in New York, so please forgive any delays in responding.

Ben

Hi Mr. Jones,

It seems like part 1 of my application have been filed, but where do I get my MIT ID to access "Application Tracking" option at my.mit.edu?

Narutofan: Did you send in part 1 on paper or online? If online, there should be a portal directly beneath the navigation bar to the left that has checkboxes next to all the materials. Beneath that is a link for specifics (date processed).

If you send it in by paper application, you should have received an MIT ID in the mail, which you then enter into the "Application Tracking" section of the website. This is located in the nav bar when you log into MyMIT.

Hi narutofan - Timur's answer is super, thanks T!

Thanks Ben, for the thoughtfulness of MIT Admissions :D

I am always amazed that this "computer" school has such a reputation for not doing things well online. HAA HAHA

You know, it's like the old saying about shoemakers' children going barefoot and doctors' children not getting medicine. :)

No problem wufei, we know how stressful this time is without the server going down.

Wow mollie, i'd missed that quote as I went through this thread. Sorta glad that I did. :-(

Anytime! You all weren't kidding when you said MIT loves it's acronyms. I can't help but notice how in many forwarded e-mails, etc, you all shorten each others' names into single letters. :).

Meh, just remember: it says less about MIT's technical aptitude than it does the school's popularity and the success of the MITBlogs and Central Meetings. :)

Hrm... I sent it by mail, but I didn't get anything on my email?

Not by e-mail. Did you get anything via smailmail about part 1 of your application? If not, they haven't processed it yet (which is wholy likely, considering the work they have to do around this time). I wouldn't worry.

When did you send in your application?

I sent part 1 through mail (because I have to send a copy of greencard) more than two weeks ago (I know it's a little late), but I can now submit part 2 online and doesn't that mean the office received part 1?

narutofan:

There's always express mail. $13.65 next day to anywhere in the US.

uh... expressmail? for what?

You can fill out Part 2 without having completed Part 1. Two weeks may seem like a long time, but remember that there are actual people (and not more than 10, I believe) opening envelopes of the 10,000+ applicants and entering them into the tracking system.

But you all have learned your lesson and are going to submit soon, far in advance of the extended deadline, yes?
[/quote]

Yes! Although, you know, I wouldn't mind a few extra days, but it's too late for that now. But as a class, we've learned our lesson. When MIT gets 3000 EA applications by August next year, they'll know why :D

I've been timing out to the Undergrad admissions page (though everything else on the site works fine). I'm sitting a little less frustrated than some of you all, though, as I submitted all the required parts of the application a number of weeks ago.

It is very considerate of the school to extend the deadline.

-Jared

Ths time, the site's not completely down. Just the whole application part!!!

eek, the site is completely down again

no it isn't. =) go through the main site and click admissions. i just edited my app...
