Sixth College alumna taking questions.

If you are a student who is living on-campus, the school will give you a set amount of dining dollars depending on if you are living in the res hall or apartments. Because you are a freshmen living in the res hall, you should get 2908 dining dollars. You can always buy more dining dollar later from the Dining and Housing Services, but I don’t recommend it. If you need more dining dollars, you should buy it off other students later into the year because the conversion rate should be a lot lower (it is like 100 cash for every 110 dining dollars).

Oh I should mention that there are two different type of special currency on campus: Dining dollars and Triton Cash. Dining dollar only works for the dining halls and markets. Triton Cash should work for every store on campus like the fast food chains in Price Center. Laundry machines also take Triton Cash (otherwise you need quarters). You don’t really need Triton Cash but it is useful sometimes. To get Triton cash, simply exchange real money for it; the ratio is 1:1.

There are actually a lot of places you can spend dining dollars at on campus. Generally, each college has their own dining hall and markets (including the school of med. I say this but there are actually a lot more places which I will mention later). The dining hall are opened from 10 am to 8 pm, and markets are opened from 7am to 1 am.

The dining halls are situated into two parts: the area where you get food and the area you eat the food at. The each entrance and exit of the food area has the cashiers stationed. You just walk in and grab the stuff you want. Most dining hall (except for foodrox) have a salad, grill (hamburger etc.), pasta-soup, and sandwich sections. Just grab the item you want and bring it to the cashiers and they will charge you however much the items cost. All your dining dollar will be in your student ID and they swipe that card in order to charge you.

The markets also accept dining dollars and they are stores like 7-11. They have canned food, junk food, frozen food, fruits, etc etc. The most important thing though is that they have coffee! They are also like dining halls, just grab your stuff and they will swipe your card.

Now there are also places other than the dining hall and market you can spend your dining dollars at. For example, there is the Bristo(ERC), Goodies(Marshall), and Roots(Miur). Bristo is a really fancy dining hall that generally need you to make a reservation because it gets pretty crowded. Goodies is like chipotle store. Roots is an entire dining hall dedicated to vegetrian food (it is even right next to the regular dining hall in miur).

With all that said, be careful with your dining dollars. The stuff that you can buy with dining dollar are generally more expensive than real cash value. For example, the same brand of bacon you can buy at the market in UCSD generally costs 1.5x ~ 2x more than what Ralphs sells. But just remember that dining dollar are actually worth a lot less than actual cash anyways so it’s about the same.

If you don’t feel like eating dining hall food, you can always order stuff from places like delsushi, sushi ninja, pizza, and the secret cookie servce (some dudes dressed in nice suits delivering cookies in a suitcase). Or you can just walk to price center which is really close to Sixth. There are like a lot of choices at price center but they don’t accept dining dollars; they only accept cash and triton cash.

^ wonders if it is okay that i answered too lol

Hey I saw someone ask about the res-halls and how they are laid out.

I lived there last year and there were actually 30 people per floor. [2 suites with 15 people each: 1 double room, 4 triple rooms]
http://hdh.ucsd.edu/housing/images/6thsuite.jpg</a>
^This is a layout picture of the 2nd floor.
The first floor has a “kitchen” in place of a study hall. I say “kitchen” because in the dorms, you are only provided with a microwave and sink. In the apartments, there is an oven and fridge but you have you bring your own microwave.

Hope this all helps :D

i was curious- are there any restaurants nearby besides the on-campus places? also, how far is the beach?

So would you say its worth it to have some Triton cash or no? If so how much
